Effect of Soil Properties on Species Richness of Fossorial Squamate Reptiles

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Species richness varies greatly over geographic gradients. Climate and other above‐ground attributes are the most common variables used to explain animal richness patterns. However, soil properties may play an important role in shaping the richness of species living underground.

Microhabitat and adhesive toepads shape gecko limb morphology

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, Volume 20, Issue 3, Page 634-650, May 2025.
Microhabitat affects gecko limb morphology differently than expected in other lizards. Although adhesive toepads' state is phylogenetically conserved, they were acquired and lost multiple times in geckos, with an association of toepads with arboreality. Padless geckos generally have longer limbs and limb segments than pad‐bearing species.

The Contemporary Distribution of Scincine Lizards Does Not Reflect Their Biogeographic Origin

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 3, Page 767-779, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim We assess the systematic relationships and historical biogeographic patterns in the subfamily Scincinae, a group of lizards that primarily inhabits the Afro‐Madagascan and Saharo‐Arabian regions with isolated lineages in Europe, North America, East Asia, India and Sri Lanka. The contemporary distribution of these lineages on the historical

Hidden Armour: The Passive Protective Function of Caudal Osteoderms in Snakes

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 286, Issue 2, February 2025.
Well‐developed caudal osteoderms were discovered in shield‐tailed snakes (Uropeltidae). Dermal armour at the tail tip likely provides passive protection against predators, though roles in locomotion or phragmosis cannot be excluded. Our findings emphasise the functional and evolutionary versatility of osteoderms and highlight the need for further ...
