A new species of Enyalioides (Iguanidae: Hoplocercinae) from southwestern Ecuador

open access: yesPapéis Avulsos de Zoologia, 2008
We describe a new species of Enyalioides from lowland cloud forests in southwestern Ecuador. This represents the third species in the genus known to occur west of the Andes in South America; the other two species are E. heterolepis and E.

Turbinal bones are still one of the last frontiers of the tetrapod skull: hypotheses, challenges and perspectives

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 99, Issue 6, Page 2304-2337, December 2024.
ABSTRACT Turbinals are bony or cartilaginous structures that are present in the nasal cavity of most tetrapods. They are involved in key functions such as olfaction, heat, and moisture conservation, as well as protection of the respiratory tract. Despite recent studies that challenged long‐standing hypotheses about their physiological and genomic ...

Does Clade Density Constrain Geographical Range Evolution?

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 14, Issue 11, November 2024.
This study investigates the impact of clade density (CD), a measure of potential interspecific competition, on the geographical range evolution of terrestrial vertebrates. By analysing distribution and phylogenetic data from 5936 species, the results reveal no significant association between CD and either the geographical distance between sister ...

The malarial parasites of Anolis species (Sauria: Iguanidae) in Panama

open access: yesInternational Journal for Parasitology, 1974
Abstract Lizards of the iguanid genus Anolis in Panama are parasitized by four species of Plasmodium. P.floridense occurs in A. limifrons, A. biporcatus, A. pentaprion and A. frenatus. The number of nuclei in mature schizonts is influenced by host species as is gametocyte shape but not gametocyte size. P. tropiduri parasitizes A.

Resurrecting plant–animal interactions in the Caribbean can benefit large‐fruited plants

open access: yesRestoration Ecology, Volume 32, Issue 7, September 2024.
Many plants benefit from seed dispersal by frugivorous animals. This mutualistic interaction depends largely on interaction‐relevant matching of functional traits (i.e. fruit size of plants and gape size of frugivores). With declines in large‐bodied animal populations, it is likely that fruit–frugivore interactions have eroded, leading to the loss of ...

Description of the Oocysts of Three New Species of Eimeria (Apicomplexa: Eimeriidae) from Iguanid Lizards (Sauria: Iguanidae) of Central and South America

open access: yesMemorias do Instituto Oswaldo Cruz, 1998
Three new species of Eimeria are described from iguanid lizards of Central and South America. The oocysts of each species have no micropyles or residua and the sporocysts lack Stieda bodies, but all have a sporocyst residuum.
