The structure of the ileofibularis muscle in the turtle Trionyx sinensis.

open access: yesArchivum histologicum japonicum, 1987
The ileofibularis muscle of the turtle Trionyx sinensis was examined by light and electron microscopy. Acetylcholinesterase staining showed an "en grappe" type of terminal. The muscle showed succinic dehydrogenase activity with three different types of fibers. The fibers appeared fibrillar type under the electron microscope.

Prolonged aestivation causes little change in skeletal muscle morphology or contractile performance in the anuran Cyclorana aloboguttata

open access: yes, 2008
Prolonged immobilisation or unloading of skeletal muscle causes muscle disuse atrophy that is characterised by a reduction in muscle cross-sectional area and compromised locomotory function.

Systematic review and meta‐analysis of protein intake to support muscle mass and function in healthy adults

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2022
We performed a systematic review, meta‐analysis, and meta‐regression to determine if increasing daily protein ingestion contributes to gaining lean body mass (LBM), muscle strength, and physical/functional test performance in healthy subjects. A protocol

Ethical guidelines for publishing in the Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle: update 2021

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2021
The Journal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle (JCSM) aims to publish articles with relevance to wasting disorders and illnesses of the muscle in the broadest sense. In order to avoid publication of inappropriate articles and to avoid protracted disputes,

Skeletal muscle alterations in patients with acute Covid‐19 and post‐acute sequelae of Covid‐19

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2022
Skeletal muscle‐related symptoms are common in both acute coronavirus disease (Covid)‐19 and post‐acute sequelae of Covid‐19 (PASC). In this narrative review, we discuss cellular and molecular pathways that are affected and consider these in regard to ...

The Notch signaling network in muscle stem cells during development, homeostasis, and disease

open access: yesSkeletal Muscle, 2022
Skeletal muscle stem cells have a central role in muscle growth and regeneration. They reside as quiescent cells in resting muscle and in response to damage they transiently amplify and fuse to produce new myofibers or self-renew to replenish the stem ...

Phase angle from bioelectrical impedance analysis is a useful indicator of muscle quality

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2021
Methods that facilitate muscle quality measurement may improve the diagnosis of sarcopenia. Current research has focused on the phase angle (PhA) obtained through bioelectrical impedance analysis (BIA) as an indicator of cellular health, particularly ...

The prevalence of low muscle mass associated with obesity in the USA

open access: yesSkeletal Muscle, 2022
Background Sarcopenia is defined as age-related low muscle mass and function, and can also describe the loss of muscle mass in certain medical conditions, such as sarcopenic obesity.

Sepsis induces interleukin 6, gp130/JAK2/STAT3, and muscle wasting

open access: yesJournal of Cachexia, Sarcopenia and Muscle, 2021
Sepsis and inflammation can cause intensive care unit‐acquired weakness (ICUAW). Increased interleukin‐6 (IL‐6) plasma levels are a risk factor for ICUAW.
