Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1992
Of 100 cases treated by the Ilizarov method, 91 patients were reviewed from February 1985 to March 1990. There were 32 tibial fractures (29 open) and 21 nonunions (nine infected). There were 47 cases of limb lengthening (28 tibia and 19 femur). The results were as follows: good, 83%; fair, 13%; and poor, 4%. Slight and intermittent pain in some wire of

The Ilizarov Technique in Ankle Fusion
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1994Failed ankle arthrodesis represents a significant challenge to the orthopaedist today. The complexity of this problem is further increased when associated with additional complications, such as osteomyelitis, leg length discrepancy, or concomitant foot deformity. In many instances, the only viable salvage alternative is amputation.

The Ilizarov Method: Rancho Technique
Orthopedic Clinics of North America, 1991Ilizarov's methods of creating new bone within a widening distraction gap have been modified at a number of centers around the world. The Rancho technique substitutes divergent titanium half pins for Ilizarov's tension wires (in most locations), while retaining the rings, hinges, posts, and functional assemblies of the Ilizarov apparatus.

Knee arthrodesis using the Ilizarov technique
Orthopaedics and Traumatology, 2000Arthrodesis of the knee without or with simultaneous lengthening. Severe degenerative osteoarthritis in younger patients. Treatment of Congenital Pseudarthrosis with the Ilizarov Technique
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1988Four patients with congenital pseudarthrosis in neurofibromatosis were treated with percutaneous transosseous fixation according to the Ilizarov method. Three tibias were first treated unsuccessfully with a Sofield procedure. After application of the Ilizarov fixator, consolidation was obtained in two cases after 6 and 19 months, respectively. A fourth

Results of Femoral Lengthening Using the Ilizarov Technique
Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, 1995We report the results of 36 femoral lengthenings in 30 consecutive patients using the Ilizarov technique. Patient age at surgery in 19 boys and 11 girls averaged 13.4 years (range, 5-18). Minimum follow-up was 2 years. The etiology of femoral shortening was congenital in 21 femora and acquired in 15.

Lengthening of the Forearm by the Ilizarov Technique
Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research, 1990The Ilizarov technique was used for lengthening 13 forearms in 12 patients. The different types of treatment were: lengthening of the radius alone, lengthening of the ulna alone with or without radial head relocation, lengthening of one-bone forearms, lengthening of the radius and ulna to the same extent, and differential lengthening of the radius and ...

The Ilizarov method for limb lengthening and reshaping is based on sound clinical investigation and animal laboratory studies. Although new to this country, it has been used successfully in the Soviet Union for 35 years. As with all new procedures, one must learn the technique and become familiar with the apparatus before attempting to perform the ...
