The paper presents a method for content-based image retrieval based on an evolutionary algorithm. Stochastic approaches have been applied with success in several optimization problems thanks to their capability to explore the solution space, in particular in complex, multidimensional spaces, avoiding local maxima of the target function.

We present a comprehensive strategy for evaluating image retrieval algorithms. Because automated image retrieval is only meaningful in its service to people, performance characterization must be grounded in human evaluation. Thus we have collected a large data set of human evaluations of retrieval results, both for query by image example and query by ...

Retrieving images by appearance
Sixth International Conference on Computer Vision (IEEE Cat. No.98CH36271), 2002A system to retrieve images using a description of the image intensity surface is presented. Gaussian derivative filters at several scales are applied to the image and low order 2D differential invariants are computed. The resulting multi-scale representation is indexed for rapid retrieval.

Abstract Most image-retrieval systems rely on similarity measures for collecting images of similar types. Similarity measures are an integral part in the development of image management systems. In this paper, we propose frame-based similarity measures for accessing structured images, e.g.

Topical Meeting On Signal Recovery and Synthesis II, 1986
In this review an overview will be given of the state-of-the-art in phase retrieval (PR). PR occurs in many different areas of signal processing: - in imaging, where the image only yields the modulus of the wavefunction in the image plane, while for the reconstruction of the object we also need its phase - in speckle interferometry where we obtain the ...

Virtual Reality for Image Retrieval
Journal of Visual Languages & Computing, 1998Image database systems have been widely studied in the last years. Having to deal with visual information, a great effort has also been put in designing and implementing user interfaces for the different retrieval engines. Most of those interfaces allow the user to specify the query through visual examples, either by feeding a complete image to the ...

Image retrieval by color semantics
Multimedia Systems, 1999The development of a system supporting querying of image databases by color content tackles a major design choice about properties of colors which are referenced within user queries. On the one hand, low-level properties directly reflect numerical features and concepts tied to the machine representation of color information.

INTERACTIVE RETRIEVAL OF COLOR IMAGES
International Journal of Image and Graphics, 2001Retrieval of color images has become an important application in recent years. We make a concise analysis of methodologies for interactive retrieval of color images. Two issues are of importance. First, the domain, which can be broad or narrow. Second, the search method, which can be object search, target search, category search or associative search.

The rapid growth of image archives increases the need for efficient and fast tools that can retrieve and search through large amount of visual data. In this paper we propose an efficient method of extracting the image color content, which serves as a digital signature, allowing to ef- ficiently index and retrieve large multimedia Internet based ...
