Is Diabetic Retinopathy Grading Biased by Imbalanced Datasets?

open access: yes, 2022
Diabetic retinopathy (DR) is one of the most severe complications of diabetes and the leading cause of vision loss and even blindness. Retinal screening contributes to early detection and treatment of diabetic retinopathy. This eye disease has five stages, namely normal, mild, moderate, severe and proliferative diabetic retinopathy.

Network divergence analysis identifies adaptive gene modules and two orthogonal vulnerability axes in pancreatic cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Tumors contain diverse cellular states whose behavior is shaped by context‐dependent gene coordination. By comparing gene–gene relationships across biological contexts, we identify adaptive transcriptional modules that reorganize into distinct vulnerability axes.

Deciphering transcriptional plasticity in pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma reveals alterations in sensory neuron innervation

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Pancreatic sensory neurons innervating healthy and PDAC tissue were retrogradely labeled and profiled by single‐cell RNA sequencing. Tumor‐associated innervation showed a dominant neurofilament‐positive subtype, altered mitochondrial gene signatures, and reduced non‐peptidergic neurons.

A Hybrid Approach Handling Imbalanced Datasets [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
Several binary classification problems exhibit imbalance in class distribution, influencing system learning. Indeed, traditional machine learning algorithms are biased towards the majority class, thus producing poor predictive accuracy over the minority one. To overcome this limitation, many approaches have been proposed up to now to build artificially

Interpreting the effects of DNA polymerase variants at the structural level

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Using MAVISp and molecular dynamics simulations, we analyzed over 60 000 missense variants in POLE and POLD1 from ClinVar, COSMIC, cBioPortal, and saturation mutagenesis. Identified mechanistic indicators, including stability, binding, and long‐range, enable structural interpretation, providing ACMG‐like evidence for possible reclassification of VUS ...

Computer Vision in Spiritual Seeing: Recognition of Christian Saints in Orthodox Iconography

open access: yesInformation
Christian Orthodox iconography is a fundamental element of the religious cultural heritage of many countries. Iconoclasm, vandalism, and the passage of time ruined the appearance of icons, making it difficult to recognize the depicted saints.

A Class Imbalance Loss for Imbalanced Object Recognition

open access: yesIEEE Journal of Selected Topics in Applied Earth Observations and Remote Sensing, 2020
The class imbalance problem exists widely in vision data. In these imbalanced datasets, the majority classes dominate the loss and influence the gradient.

Performance Improvement of Deep Learning Based Multi-Class ECG Classification Model Using Limited Medical Dataset

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2023
Medical data often exhibit class imbalance, which poses a challenge in classification tasks. To solve this problem, data augmentation techniques are used to balance the data.
