A parental care-mating dilemma? Potential risks for offspring in the Pholcid spider when egg-carrying females accept mating [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Many species face a trade-off between additional mating opportunities and the offspring benefits (viability, quality) provided by parental care.

Camel herd health and productivity in Eastern Ethiopia selected semi-nomadic households

open access: yesRevue d’Elevage et de Médecine Vétérinaire des Pays Tropicaux, 2000
This study was conducted on camels kept under pastoral management conditions from October 1997 to September 1998. Trypanosomosis was one of the most important diseases identified with a maximum prevalence of 20.6% and minimum of 5.4% for the sampled ...

Experimental Characterization of Mycelium‐Based Composites Under Multiple Loading Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines the mechanical response of mycelium‐based composites under compression, shear, and tension using mechanical testing and imaging methods. The comparison between unpressed and hot‐pressed specimens shows that hot pressing is associated with higher compression and shear stiffnesses.

Contained semi-field environments for ecological studies on transgenic African malaria vectors: benefits and constraints

open access: yes, 2002
New interventions are needed to reduce the burden of vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengué, which are among the most serious and prevalent infectious diseases worldwide. The release of genetically modified (GM) mosquitoes may offer an alternative

Suppression of cuelure attraction in male Queensland fruit flies provided raspberry ketone supplements as immature adults.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2017
Tephritid fruit flies are amongst the most damaging insect pests of horticulture globally. Some of the key fruit fly species are managed using the sterile insect technique (SIT), whereby millions of sterile males are released to suppress reproduction of ...

Compatibility of Methacrylate Based Resins Controls Interfacial Failure and Toughness in 3D‐Printed Multimaterial Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This work shows that the mechanical performance of multimaterial digital light processing (DLP) printed thermoset composites is governed by resin compatibility and interfacial design rather than spatial patterning alone. Brittle and ductile resin combinations produced premature interfacial failure, while graded interfaces and mechanically compatible ...

Cytofluorometry and fluorescence confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM) in the study of neutral lipid dynamics in Paramecium primaurelia mating types during cell line development

open access: yes, 1999
Background: In Paramecium primaurelia, an exconjugant cell can produce two Lines with different mating capacities. Mating type II cells can form a higher food vacuole number and digest the nutrient taken up in a shorter time; thus, mating type II cells ...

Microarray analysis of gene expression induced by sexual contact in Schistosoma mansoni

open access: yesBMC Genomics, 2007
Background The parasitic trematode Schistosoma mansoni is one of the major causative agents of Schistosomiasis, a disease that affects approximately 200 million people, mostly in developing countries.

Experimental and Numerical Modal Analysis of Composite Sandwich Structures Using Surfboards as Model Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This article presents an experimental and numerical modal investigation of composite sandwich structures using surfboards as model systems. By comparing different core materials and reinforcement strategies, the study demonstrates how local stiffeners influence vibrational response and introduce characteristic modal features, highlighting modal ...
