Incorporation of Selenium into Sol–Gel‐Derived Bioactive Glass: Influence on Glass Structure, Bioactivity, and its Selective Cytotoxicity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Selenium was incorporated into a sol–gel‐derived bioactive glass to enable sustained therapeutic ion release. The selenium‐containing glass preserved bioactivity while selectively inducing cytotoxicity in osteosarcoma cells and maintaining osteoblastic viability.

Investigating intermittent immersion during osmotic dehydration of mango (Mangifera indica L. Moench). Part A: Determination of optimal conditions for mango (Mangifera indica L. Moench) dehydration impregnation by immersion (D2I) and intermittent immersion (D3I)

open access: yesHeliyon
This work aimed to determine the optimum conditions for dehydration impregnation by immersion (D2I) and by intermittent immersion (D3I) of mango (Mangifera indica) slices measuring 4 × 1 × 1 cm3.

Numerical methods and time-dependent physical models for the design and diagnostic of pulsed-dc magnetrons [PDF]

open access: yes, 2006
Pulsed DC operation of magnetrons is a relatively new sputtering technique that significantly improves the properties of deposited layers. The understanding and control of phenomena taking place during pulsed DC sputtering requires new time-resolved ...

Time‐Dependent Oxidation and Scale Evolution of a Wrought Co/Ni‐Based Superalloy

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study shows how a new wrought Co/Ni‐based superalloy resists oxidation at 800 ∘$^\circ$C. The oxide scale changes from rough, fast‐growing spinel to a dense, protective chromia–alumina layer. Atom probe analysis reveals tiny refractory‐rich bubbles at the interface that mark the transition to long‐term, diffusion‐controlled protection ...

Understanding the Stochastic Nature of Process Parameter Development of Blown Powder Laser Beam Directed Energy Deposition Additive Manufacturing of Pure Molybdenum

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Identified through the use of statistical design of experiments and metallographic investigation, this study exposes the stochastic origins of intergranular cracks in blown powder laser beam directed energy deposition additive manufacturing of pure molybdenum. It further demonstrates a successful crack mitigation approach with direct correlation to the

Fictionalising music / musicalising fiction: the integrative function of music in Richard Powers' The Time of Our Singing [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Twentieth-century scholars tended to describe music either in constructivist terms, as a culturally produced system of signs without real effects, or in essentialist terms, as a universal force detached from sociocultural contexts. Recently, however, the
