“Devil’s Staircases” in Bulk-Immiscible Ultrathin Alloy Films

Physical Review Letters, 2002
Ground-state phase diagrams of ultrathin epitaxial alloy films are studied within the framework of a discrete lattice-model Hamiltonian incorporating competing elastic and chemical interactions. For bulk-immiscible alloy systems an infinite number of commensurate, long-period stripe-superstructure ground states are obtained as a function of chemical ...

Immiscibility in liquid Li-Na alloys

Physics Letters A, 1972
Abstract The immiscibility of a liquid Li-Na alloy is discussed using the microscopic total energy based on a pseudopotential method. The effective pair potentials between ions seem to play n important role for immiscibility in LiNa system.

Continuous Solidification of Immiscible Alloys and Microstructure Control

Microgravity Science and Technology, 2018
Immiscible alloys have aroused considerable interest in last few decades due to their excellent physical and mechanical characteristics as well as potential industrial applications. Up to date, plenty of researches have been carried out to investigate the solidification of immiscible alloys on the ground or in space and great progress has been made. It

Properties of immiscible polymer alloys without compatibilizer

Journal of Applied Polymer Science, 1998
The miscibility and properties of the alloys composed of polyphenylene ether (PPE), polystyrene (PS), and acrylonitrile-styrene (SAN) polymers have been studied. The heat distortion temperature and flexual strength decreased with increasing AN contents in SAN in PPE/SAN alloys because the mutual solubility was poor in the high-AN content region ...

Alloying of immiscible Ge with Al by ball milling

Materials Letters, 2003
Abstract Mechanical alloying (MA) is a versatile technique to produce nanocrystalline and amorphous alloys. Its special advantage is to form alloys of immiscible elements. High energy planetary ball milling has been used to produce Al–2 wt.% Ge alloy.

Microstructure Formation in a Directionally Solidified Immiscible Alloy

Metallurgical and Materials Transactions A, 2008
Directional solidification experiments were carried out with an Al-Pb alloy. A model was developed to analyze the microstructure evolution in a directionally solidified immiscible alloy by taking into account the common actions of the nucleation and the diffusional growth/shrinkage of the minority phase droplets (MPDs), the spatial phase segregation ...

The enthalpy state of amorphous alloys in an immiscible system

Applied Physics Letters, 2001
We performed calorimetric measurements of the enthalpy of formation of amorphous alloys created using vapor quenching in a highly immiscible system, Ag–Ni. The low-enthalpy states observed, as compared with extrapolated liquids and crystalline solid solutions, are in agreement with the findings from molecular dynamics (MD) simulations.

Processing and characterization of mechanically alloyed immiscible metals

International Journal of Materials Research, 2012
Abstract A number of metal systems exhibit positive heat of mixing between the constituent elements and consequently they are immiscible and cannot form alloys. Some classical examples of these systems are Ti–Mg, Zr–Nb, W–Cu, Ni–Ag, and Cu–Fe.

Compositional patterning in immiscible alloys driven by irradiation

Physical Review B, 2001
Ion-beam mixing of immiscible alloys is viewed as a competing dynamic process, where irradiation-induced mixing opposes thermal decomposition. The external perturbation drives the system away from equilibrium, and in the long-time regime the system can exhibit phase and microstructural modifications. Due to the nonequilibrium nature of the process, the
