Risk and protective factors for ASF in domestic pigs and wild boar in the EU, and mitigation measures for managing the disease in wild boar

open access: yesEFSA Journal, Volume 22, Issue 12, December 2024.
Abstract Five epidemiological aspects of ASF were evaluated using literature reviews, field studies, questionnaires and mathematical models. First, a literature review and a case–control study in commercial pig farms emphasised the importance of biosecurity and farming practices, including the spread of manure around farms and the use of bedding ...

Immunocastration of Farm Animals

open access: yes, 2005
In the farm animal species, the control of fertility and of sexual and aggressive behaviour are important factors of productivity. Traditionally, they have been reduced by surgical approaches. But, castration becomes unacceptable generating stress and decreasing animal efficiency and carcass quality.

A career in numbers: A citation network analysis of the work of RP Millar and his contribution to GnRH research

open access: yesJournal of Neuroendocrinology, Volume 36, Issue 10, October 2024.
Here, we use citation network analysis in a novel manner to identify the particular topics to which RP Millar's papers have made a particular contribution. This analysis shows that it makes no sense to conceive of the citation impact of an author in isolation; it depends on the existence of a receptive community that is alert to the potential utility ...

Consumer animal welfare and healthy perception of fresh sausages’ fiber fat replaced and elaborated with meat from non‐castrated male pigs

open access: yesFood Science &Nutrition, Volume 12, Issue 9, Page 6720-6734, September 2024.
Entire male pork sausages reduced in fat and with vegetable fiber are positively perceived by consumers. Reduced‐fat entire male pork sausages with vegetable fiber can be an option for marketing this meat. Consumers consider castration to be justified if it improves the sensory perception of entire male pork.

Protein turnover in pigs: A review of interacting factors

open access: yesJournal of Animal Physiology and Animal Nutrition, Volume 108, Issue 2, Page 451-469, March 2024.
Abstract Protein turnover defines the balance between two continuous and complex processes of protein metabolism, synthesis and degradation, which determine their deposition in tissues. Although the liver and intestine have been studied extensively for their important roles in protein digestion, absorption and metabolism, the study of protein ...

Immunocastrated female pigs’ social and feeding behaviour

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Zootecnia, 2022
ABSTRACT This study compared the social and feeding behaviour of immunocastrated female pigs using different immunocastration protocols. We used seventy-two gilts from industrial crossbreeding (Agroceres × Topigs) at 15 weeks of age. The pigs were distributed in a randomised design with three treatments.

Effect of early immunocastration on testicular histology in pigs [PDF]

open access: yesVeterinární medicína, 2018
The objective of this study was to investigate short- and long-term effects of early immunocastration with Improvac® vaccine, administered in two doses, at ages eight and 14 weeks, on testicular histology in pigs slaughtered eight or 15 weeks after the second dose.

Immunocastration reduces aggressive and sexual behaviour in male pigs

open access: yesAnimal, 2010
The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) vaccine, Improvac™ (Pfizer Ltd), in suppressing aggressive and sexual behaviour of male pigs. One hundred and thirty-six pigs were assigned to three treatments: entire male pigs (n = 64), immunocastration against GnRH (n = 48) and surgical castration (n =

TEORETICAL AND PRACTICAL ASPECTS OF IMMUNOCASTRATION

open access: yesStočarstvo : Časopis za unapređenje stočarstva, 2014
Due to animal welfare problems and strong public opposition a ban on surgical castration of male piglets is foreseen in EU until the end of 2018. To cope with this major change in pig production, intensive research of possible alternatives is carried out, in particular fattening of entire (EM) and immunocastrated (IC) males.

Effect of Immunocastration on Performance of Slovenian Pig Fatteners

open access: yesAgriculturae Conspectus Scientificus, 2011
The influence of the immunocastration (immunisation against GnRH) on pig performance (growth, carcass and meat quality traits) was investigated in two parallel experiments (on two farms) with two crossbreeds – G1 (50% Duroc) and G2 (50% Pietrain).
