Panama Canal expansion and shifts in fishing practices: A social‐ecological network approach

open access: yesPeople and Nature, Volume 8, Issue 5, Page 1520-1532, May 2026.
Abstract Species introductions have spiked over the past two centuries due to globalization. These introductions impact ecosystems, but may also have long‐term implications for human communities. In one of the world's hubs for global shipping, the Panama Canal, a recent canal expansion has coincided with an increase in marine fishes entering the ...

El impacto cultural

open access: yesEntorno, 2001

Complementary Capacities and Shared Challenges: Lessons From a Brazil‐Australia Water Management Consortium

open access: yesWorld Water Policy, Volume 12, Issue 2, May 2026.
ABSTRACT Transnational collaboration is critical for water‐security innovation, yet actor configurations and thematic priorities remain poorly characterized. We surveyed 92 Australian and Brazilian researchers from the Tropical Water Research Alliance (TWRA), analyzing 11 sets of binary variables on collaboration modes, stakeholders, implementation ...

Impactos

open access: yes

Foraging plasticity and physiological adaptations enable hummingbirds to subsist on dilute nectars

open access: yesFunctional Ecology, Volume 40, Issue 5, Page 1475-1490, May 2026.
Read the free Plain Language Summary for this article on the Journal blog. Abstract Hummingbirds frequently feed on small volumes (<30 μL) of sucrose‐rich nectars. Climate change is expected to affect both the abundance and the concentrations of accumulated nectar.

Grandes obras... Grandes impactos

Simulating drying and human impacts on river networks to evaluate biological quality indices performance through the lens of metacommunity theory

open access: yesJournal of Applied Ecology, Volume 63, Issue 5, May 2026.
This work constitutes a first step towards developing simulation‐based assessments that incorporate catchment drying patterns to support biomonitoring of drying river networks. Our approach can inform stakeholders when current methods are likely to fail and contribute to decision‐making on whether adapting current methods is possible or developing new ...

European mistletoe shares a similar demographic strategy with non‐parasitic plants

open access: yesJournal of Ecology, Volume 114, Issue 5, May 2026.
European mistletoe (Viscum album) does not have a distinct demographic strategy from non‐parasitic plants, as quantified by time‐based life history traits. We found that mistletoe vital rates were driven by mistletoe size and position in the host tree.
