Crawling under the radar: Two novel Paulinella species expand knowledge about the ecology and evolution of a primary plastid‐containing amoeba lineage

open access: yesJournal of Phycology, EarlyView.
Abstract The genus Paulinella represents a rare, independent case of primary endosymbiosis, providing a unique system to study the early stages of organelle evolution. Here, we expand current understanding of primary plastid endosymbiosis through the discovery and characterization of two novel photosynthetic amoebae, Paulinella marae sp. nov.

A phylogenomic approach for a new infrageneric classification of Bulbostylis (Abildgaardieae, Cyperaceae)

open access: yesJournal of Systematics and Evolution, EarlyView.
In this study, we investigate the relationships among 149 species of Bulbostylis (Cyperaceae)—representing 69% of global diversity—using a universal probe kit for targeted genomic sequencing of flowering plants (Angiosperms353 probe kit). Our sampling also includes the genus Nelmesia, which we found to fall within Bulbostylis.

When One Matters More: Keystone Niche Individuals Shape Population‐Level Niches in Ectothermic Vertebrates

open access: yesJournal of Zoology, EarlyView.
The recently proposed concept of Keystone Niche Individuals, that is, individuals that disproportionately influence their population's niche width, provides a framework to explore how individuals shape ecological niches. We applied this framework to a dataset of 482 salamanders across 21 populations and seven taxa to assess the prevalence and ...
