Cochlear implants have evolved to become the treatment of choice for severely hearing-impaired patients. Speech signals are picked up by a microphone, processed and then delivered to the stimulating electrodes (the current maximum number being 22) that are placed on an electrode array implanted into the scala tympani of the cochlea. The target cells of

Although levonorgestrel contraceptive implants have been available for over 15 years, innovations have only recently led to a wider choice. These new implants offer easier insertion and removal and other advantages depending on the type of progestin. Implants prevent pregnancy by several mechanisms, including inhibition of ovulation and luteal function

The application of endosseous dental implants for the retention and stabilization of extraoral prostheses and hearing aids has been shown to be effective functionally and aesthetically. Implants have reduced the need for adhesive use, simplifying cleaning procedures and thus extending the life of the prosthesis.

Cochlear implants seem to be the first long step in the search for a mechanical prosthesis that would restore hearing to the profoundly deaf. While present developments with implants appear to have been successful in providing deafened individuals with a reasonably wide range of information, the ultimate goal, the full comprehension of discriminable ...

Cochlear implants are an appropriate alternative for selected deaf children and adults who do not benefit from conventional amplification. Improvements have been documented in speech perception and speech production skills. Multichannel systems, which provide spectral information in addition to temporal and intensity cues, have demonstrated performance

The Totally Implantable Cochlear Implant
Ear & Hearing, 2007The concept of a totally implantable cochlear implant (TICI) offers the following advantages over the present generation of semi-implantable cochlear implants. These advantages include (1) cosmetics: deafness can be "hidden," because there is no external hardware during use; (2) no external hardware (e.g., cables, speech processor) to fail or be ...

The experience of 6 million Norplant users has led to several more advanced implants. Implanon is a single-rod implant system containing a low androgenic progestin and requires 1 to 2 minutes for insertion and removal. Like other implants, Implanon prevents pregnancy by changing the character of the cervical mucus and interfering with luteal function ...

An implantable sustained release device has been developed to treat chronic disorders of the eye. The device, consisting of a central core of drug encased in layers of permeable and impermeable polymers, can be implanted subconjunctivally or intravitreally. This technique was used to develop a ganciclovir device which, when implanted into the vitreous,
