Numerals and scalar implicatures
2011In this paper we explore the relation between the meaning of number denoting determiners (‘numerals’) and the polarity of the context in which they occur. We claim that when numerals are embedded in positive (i.e. Upward Entailing) contexts they are given an upper bounded (‘exactly’) reading more often than when they are embedded in minimally different

On Presuppositional Implicatures
Topoi, 2014Scalar implicatures arise when a speaker uses a logically weak alternative in a context where a logically stronger alternative was available. Presuppositional implicatures, as I call them, arise when a speaker uses a presuppositionally weak alternative when a presuppositionally stronger alternative was available.

Obligatory Implicatures and Grammaticality
2012The paper explores some puzzling data on number agreement with disjunctive noun phrases in Russian. Specifically, it is shown that plural agreement can be blocked as a result of scalar implicature calculation. More generally, I propose that a sentence can be judged ungrammatical when it has scalar implicatures that contradict each other and that cannot

This volume brings together two highly researched but also highly controversial concepts, those of politeness and implicature. A theory of implicature as social action and im/politeness as social practice is developed that opens up new ways of examining the relationship between them. It constitutes a fresh look at the issues involved that redresses the
