STAT3 expression is reduced in cardiac pericytes in HFpEF and its loss reduces cellular adhesion and induces pericyte senescence

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Heart failure with preserved ejection fraction (HFpEF) accounts for half of the heart failure cases. It is characterised by microvascular dysfunction, associated with reduced pericyte coverage and diminished STAT3 expression in pericytes. Loss of STAT3 impairs pericyte adhesion, promotes senescence, and activates a pro‐fibrotic gene program.

A Conjugation Symmetry in Linear Electromagnetism, in Extension of Materials with Negative Real Permittivity and Permeability Scalars [PDF]

open access: yesMicrowave and Optical Technology Letters, Vol. 40, pp. 160-161, 2004, 2003
If all space is occupied by a linear bianisotropic material--whether homogeneous or not--then the concurrent replacements of the permittivity and the impermeability tensors by the negatives of their respective complex conjugates and of the magnetoelectric tensors by their respective complex conjugates (in the Boys-Post representation) imply the ...

Ion channel function of polycystin‐2/polycystin‐1 heteromer revealed by structure‐guided mutagenesis

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Mutations in polycystin‐1 (PC1) or polycystin‐2 (PC2) cause autosomal‐dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD). We generated a novel gain‐of‐function PC2/PC1 heteromeric ion channel by mutating pore‐blocking residues. Moreover, we demonstrated that PC2 will preferentially assemble with PC1 to form heteromeric complexes when PC1 is co‐expressed ...

Protonophore activity of short‐chain fatty acids induces their intracellular accumulation and acidification

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
The protonated form of butyrate, as well as other short‐chain fatty acids (SCFAs), is membrane permeable. In acidic extracellular environments, this can lead to intracellular accumulation of SCFAs and cytosolic acidification. This phenomenon will be particularly relevant in acidic environments such as the large intestine or tumor microenvironments ...

Determining the True Optical Gap in a High-Performance Organic Photovoltaic Polymer Using Single-Molecule Spectroscopy [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
Low-gap conjugated polymers have enabled an impressive increase in the efficiencies of organic solar cells, primarily due to their red absorption which allows harvesting of that part of the solar spectrum. Here, we report that the true optical gap of one prototypical material, PTB7, is in fact at significantly higher energy than has previously been ...

Parallel, Series, and Intermediate Interconnections of Optical Nanocircuit Elements Part 2: Nanocircuit and Physical Interpretation [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Applying the analytical closed-form solutions of the 'quasi-static' potential distribution around two conjoined resonant half-cylinders with different permittivities, reported in the first part of our manuscript, here we interpret these results in terms of our nanocircuit paradigm applicable to nanoparticles at infrared and optical frequencies [N ...
