Adaptive Blind Equalization in Impulsive Noise

2020 54th Asilomar Conference on Signals, Systems, and Computers, 2020
This work investigates the problem of blind channel equalization in the presence of burst noise. Modeling impulsive noise distribution as generalized-Gaussian, we derive an appropriate criterion for blind equalization. Our method exploits Wijsman’s theorem and develops a maximal-invariant test of equally-likely pulsed signals against impulsive ...

Loudness and Impulsive Noise

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1970
A commonly accepted criterion for noise control is a family of curves known as the NC or N curves. This criterion was based upon a study by Beranek relating speech interference levels and loudness levels to subjective limits of acceptibility within various environments.

Impulsive Noise Measurements

2018
The phenomenon of impulsive noise is generated by Partial discharge (PD) sources in high-voltage substations. A PD generates a current impulse, acoustic noise, visible and ultraviolet (UV) light and electromagnetic radiation , and accordingly its presence can be detected via several measurement methods.

Impulse Noise Filtering

2016
Digital images are often corrupted by various types of noises amongst which impulse noise is most prevalent. Impulse noise appears during transmission and/or acquisition of images. Intrusion of impulse noise degrades the quality of the image and causes the loss of fine image details.

Are Impulse Responses Gaussian Noises?

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 2011
Many years ago, Manfred Schroeder proved that transfer functions in rooms follow complex Gaussian distributions. This property was extended to impulse responses by the author, following a suggestion by Moorer for simulating impulse responses. More recently, several authors have checked again the later property with modern signal analysis tools.

Impulsive Noises in Restaurants

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1967
In work reported earlier, the authors examined the speech component of the restaurant-noise environment and developed a design method for achieving the required acoustic criteria. In the recent work presented here, they have expanded their analysis of the noise environment to include sounds such as dish and silverware clatter and other impact sounds.

Does Impulse Noise Induce Vestibular Disturbances?

Acta Oto-Laryngologica, 1989
The effect of impulse noise on postural stability was evaluated in 54 subjects from the Finnish army, who were suffering from acute hearing loss caused by exposure to firearms noise. For referents we used 20 non-exposed army recruits and 39 civilian volunteers.

Impulse noise and startle

The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America, 1998
It is well known that impulsive noise caused by gunfire, explosive devices, and high speed overflight by aircraft at low altitudes can cause an acoustic startle effect (ASE). The ASE is one of many possible startle effects which are normally associated with unexpected stimuli.

Understanding Impulse-Noise Measurements

IEEE Transactions on Communications, 1972
Numerous articles have been written on the general properties of impulse noise, models for it, and its effects on data transmission. Most of these make an attempt to apply or generate some particular theory with respect to the phenomenon. A literature search has given rise to an awareness of the need for a paper devoted solely to the idiosyncrasies of ...
