Optimization of flux-surface density variation in stellarator plasmas with respect to the transport of collisional impurities [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Avoiding impurity accumulation is a requirement for steady-state stellarator operation. The accumulation of impurities can be heavily affected by variations in their density on the flux-surface.

Investigation of Laser Ablation and Brush Pre‐Treatments for AlCu Cold Roll Bonding in Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
It is shown that laser ablation pretreatment under oxygen‐free conditions enables copper–aluminium bonding at significantly lower deformation degrees and improved properties compared to mechanical brushing. Laser ablation further increases interface contact area and induces favourable residual stress states and microstructural compatibility ...

Controlling impurity transport in 5D gyrokinetic simulations using a transport barrier

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The effects of transport barriers on impurity transport, specifically helium (He) and tungsten (W), are investigated using the global, flux-driven, full-F, 5D gyrokinetic code GYSELA.

Analysis of the impurity flow velocity in a wide plasma parameter range for deuterium and hydrogen plasmas in the divertor legs of the stochastic layer in LHD

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2018
Impurity flow velocity measurements have been conducted for different magnetic field configurations in a wide plasma parameter range in the divertor leg region of LHD for understanding of the edge impurity transport.

Effect of spatial distribution of impurity ions on the signal of ‘C/O monitor for Wendelstein 7-X’ - an indicator of plasma wall interactions

open access: yesNuclear Materials and Energy, 2022
The ‘C/O monitor’ is a dedicated diagnostic system designed to monitor light impurities (B, C, N and O) in the Wendelstein 7-X (W7-X) stellarator. Its main goal is to provide fast (∼1 ms) information about the impurity level which is measured from a ...

Enhanced Gamma Radiation Shielding Using Epoxy Quartz Fabric Composites Reinforced With CoCl2 Microparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The growing demand for lightweight, nontoxic, and multifunctional gamma shielding materials has intensified efforts to find alternatives to conventional lead and aluminum‐based protectants. In this work, we develop epoxy quartz fabric composites reinforced with cobalt chloride (CoCl2) microparticles, fabricated via hand lay‐up with varying filler ...

Impurity leakage mechanisms in the Wendelstein 7-X island divertor under friction-dominated conditions

open access: yesNuclear Fusion
The EMC3-Eirene code was used to study the main impurity leakage mechanism for the island divertor in the standard magnetic field configuration. It was found that under experimentally accessible plasma scenarios in the last experimental campaign, the ...

Impurity transport in trapped electron mode driven turbulence

open access: yes, 2013
Trapped electron mode turbulence is studied by gyrokinetic simulations with the GYRO code and an analytical model including the effect of a poloidally varying electrostatic potential. Its impact on radial transport of high-Z trace impurities close to the

Impurity transport studies at Wendelstein 7-X by means of x-ray imaging spectrometer measurements

open access: yesPlasma Physics and Controlled Fusion, 2018
This paper reports on the effect of onand off-axis heating power deposition on the impurity confinement in purely electron cyclotron resonance heated He plasmas on the stellarator Wendelstein 7-X.

EBSD Study of Creep‐Induced Lattice Misorientation in MgO‐Particle‐Reinforced Austenitic Steel Composites

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Creep experiments at 900°C on coarse‐grained steel‐ceramic composites containing recycled magnesia reveal that higher ceramic volume fractions significantly enhance the creep resistance. Detailed EBSD investigations identify subgrain formation in the steel matrix as the dominant deformation mechanism.
