In H.264/AVC, block — based transformation, quantization, scaling, inverse scaling and inverse transformation are applied for the reconstruction of future reference frame in the encoder to diminish spatial and also temporal redundancies. With block-based coding technique, at block boundaries discontinuities are created which are known as blocking ...

Adaptive Deep Reinforcement Learning-Based In-Loop Filter for VVC
IEEE Transactions on Image Processing, 2021Deep learning-based in-loop filters have recently demonstrated great improvement for both coding efficiency and subjective quality in video coding. However, most existing deep learning-based in-loop filters tend to develop a sophisticated model in exchange for good performance, and they employ a single network structure to all reconstructed samples ...

Geometry transformation-based adaptive in-loop filter
2016 Picture Coding Symposium (PCS), 2016Recently, adaptive in-loop filter (ALF) for image/video coding has attracted increasing attention by its proven capability in improving coding performance. ALF is aiming to minimize the mean square error between original samples and decoded samples by using Wiener-based adaptive filter.

In this study, it is aimed to calculate filter coefficients used in recently proposed optimal post-process/in-loop filtering method, fast for improved video compression performance. At the same time, the effect of optimal filter coefficients to bit stream size is evaluated.

This chapter provides an introduction to in-loop filters in AVS-2. The first part presents the characteristic of compression artifacts caused by block-based video coding methods, the necessity of in-loop filtering to improve video coding efficiency and the quality of compressed videos.

In-loop filter using block-based filter control for video coding
2009 16th IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2009In this paper, a method of improving coding efficiency is proposed by using the Wiener filter as an in-loop filter. The Wiener filter can minimize the mean square error between the input image and the decoded image. However, errors of some pixels increase by filtering process.

Separable Wiener filter based adaptive in-loop filter for video coding
28th Picture Coding Symposium, 2010Recent investigations have shown that a non-separable Wiener filter, that is applied inside the motion-compensation loop, can improve the coding efficiency of hybrid video coding designs. In this paper, we study the application of separable Wiener filters. Our design includes the possibility to adaptively choose between the application of the vertical,

The HEVC standard specifies two in-loop filters, a deblocking filter and a sample adaptive offset (SAO). The in-loop filters are applied in the encoding and decoding loops, after the inverse quantization and before saving the picture in the decoded picture buffer. The deblocking filter is applied first.

Global motion temporal filtering for in-loop deblocking
2010 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing, 2010One of the most severe problems in hybrid video coding is its block-based approach, which leads to distortions called blocking artifacts. These artifacts affect not only the subjective perception at the receiver but also the motion compensated prediction (MCP) that generates a prediction signal from previously decoded pictures. It is therefore directly

Depth image in-loop filter via graph cut
2016 IEEE International Conference on Image Processing (ICIP), 2016With the ability of representing 3D scene geometry, depth maps are used to synthesize virtual views in free view video (FVV) or 3DTV. However, compression artefact of the depth images always lead to seriously geometry distortions in synthesized view, which severely affects the visual perception of 3D display.
