Calving patterns in seasonal dairy herds

Two field studies examined the calving patterns of cows in seasonal dairy herds in the Waikato (Field Study 1) and South Taranaki regions (Field Study 2). The first study examined patterns for cows commencing their second or subsequent lactation in herds which had used an inseminating service during the previous season.

Thyroid function in seasonal affective disorder

Morning serum levels of triiodothyronine (T3), free thyroxine (F-T4) and thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) were measured in Winter-Seasonal Affective Disorder patients in nondepressed state in summer and before and after light treatment in winter. Practically all patients had hormone levels well within the reference ranges.

Patients with winter seasonal affective disorder (SAD) often have abnormalities in the resetting of their circadian clock. The circadian cycle appears to be variable across days among these patients, deviating from the exact 24 hours, and peaking at unstable times. The findings suggest that the mean free-running circadian period is longer in winter SAD
