Stress is a common property of thin films. After a brief summary of origins and effects of stresses in thin films the particular situation in amorphous and nanocrystalline films is discussed. The problems related to the extremely high compressive stresses in cubic boron nitride (cBN) have been tackled either by the deposition of buffer layers or by ...

In-situ calibration of stress chips
40th Conference Proceedings on Electronic Components and Technology, 1990A novel procedure employing moire interferometry has been successfully implemented for the accurate in-situ calibration of stress chips. Strains were measured by this accurate and extremely sensitive technique at the locations of the gauges and related to corresponding gauge-resistance changes.

In situ stress assessment based on plastic behavior of borehole breakouts and machine learning
International journal for numerical and analytical methods in geomechanics (Print), 2022The accurate estimation of in situ stress tensor has an inevitable role in solving problems facing the development of oil and gas fields. Two components of three, vertical stress ( σv${\sigma }_v$ ) and minimum horizontal stress ( σh${\sigma }_h ...

The state of stress existing in the rock mass prior to any construction work is referred to as the in-situ or primary state of stress. A knowledge of this state is important to the planning and construction of engineering structures in rock. Chapters 11, 12 and 13 in particular demonstrated the considerable influence exercised by the in-situ state of ...

Before measuring virgin stresses with some of the methods discussed in the following chapters, an attempt should be made to obtain an estimate of the in situ stress field. This can be done, for instance, from stress versus depth relationships or observations obtained from stress measurements made in the past in the region of interest or by ...

In situ stress determination by stress change monitoring
2020The in situ stresses are important design parameters in rock engineering. Unfortunately, conventional stress measurement techniques are expensive, difficult to execute, and often inconclusive due to spatial variations in stress or scale effects. An innovative and for many applications economical approach has been developed at the Geomechanics Research ...
