Hydraulic fracturing for in situ stress measurement

Journal of Mining Science, 2016
It is experimentally found that shut-in pressure conforms with the fracture initiation pressure if the fracture surfaces are uniformly loaded by fluid. The article shows that equaling minimal stress and shut-in pressure in local fractures results in overestimates.

Methods of in situ Stress Measurement

1997
Compared with other rock mass properties, rock stress is a difficult quantity to measure. As pointed out by Leeman (1959), ‘It is impossible to measure stress directly since, in fact, it is a fictitious quantity. It is only possible to deduce the stresses in a solid body from the results of measurements using some indirect method’.

In-Situ Stress Measurements During Drilling

Journal of Petroleum Technology, 1986
Summary This paper describes the results of six microfracturing experiments in a gas well in south Texas. The experiments were conducted in open hole and during the drilling operations. Microfracturing consisted of pumping very small volumes of drilling mud (tens of gallons) at very low rates (3 to 30 gal/min [189 ...

Research on In-situ Stress Measurement and Roadway Support Design in Coal Seam

Frontiers in Sustainable Development
Based on the existing situation of No.3 Coal Seam in Hengxing coal mine, the in-situ stress measurement was carried out at the two measuring points of the main inclined shaft bottom yard and the track roadway by using the core stress relief method, and ...

In Situ Stress Measurements During Copper Deposition

ECS Transactions, 2007
In situ stress measurements were made during copper electrodeposition onto (111)-textured Au from acidic sulfate electrolyte using the wafer curvature method. During the bulk deposition of Cu, there is a rapid increase in tensile stress during the first 20 nm of growth that we attribute to nuclei coalescence and grain boundary formation.

Uniaxial stress in-situ measurement using EMAT shear and longitudinal waves: Transducer design and experiments

, 2021
As a typical stressed state, uniaxial stress widely exists in the components, such as bolt stress, which requires to be tested in-situ regularly. In this article, the uniaxial stress in-situ measurement using the electromagnetic acoustic transducer (EMAT)

The effects of in situ stress uncertainties on the assessment of open stope stability: Case study at the Niobec Mine, Quebec (Canada)

, 2021
In deep underground mines, a successful development plan to exploit deeper mining levels is highly dependent on adequate consideration of the magnitude and orientation of situ stress state.

Deep in-situ stress measurements by hydrofracturing

Tectonophysics, 1975
Abstract Hydrofracturing is a recently developed in-situ stress-measuring method. It consists of hydraulically pressurizing a sealed-off interval inside of a borehole until fracture initiates. The fracture is then extended by additional pumping of fluids from the surface.
