They’re back! In 1966, a child smuggled three giant African land snails into south Florida which were released in their garden. Seven years later, more than 18,000 snails had been found and it took 10 years and $1 million to eliminate them.

HNF4A Haploinsufficiency in MODY1 Abrogates Liver and Pancreas Differentiation from Patient-Derived Induced Pluripotent Stem Cells. [PDF]
Maturity-onset diabetes of the young 1 (MODY1) is a monogenic diabetes condition caused by heterozygous HNF4A mutations. We investigate how HNF4A haploinsufficiency from a MODY1/HNF4A mutation influences the development of foregut-derived liver and ...

Friction stir welding of AA2024-T3: development of numerical simulation considering thermal history and heat generation [PDF]
This paper proposes a finite element model implemented in ANSYS using Lagrangian formulation to assess heat generation and friction dynamics of a friction stir welding process on AA2024-T3 aluminum plates.

On the finite element approximation of a semicoercive stokes variational inequality arising in glaciology [PDF]
Stokes variational inequalities arise in the formulation of glaciological problems involving contact. We consider the problem of a two-dimensional marine ice sheet with a grounding line, although the analysis presented here is extendable to other contact

Simulating gene silencing through intervention analysis [PDF]
We propose a novel method for simulating the effects of gene silencing. Our approach combines relevant subject matter information provided by biological pathways with gene expression levels measured in regular conditions to predict the behavior of the ...

Deficiency of cathepsin S reduces atherosclerosis in LDL receptor–deficient mice [PDF]
Human atherosclerotic lesions overexpress the lysosomal cysteine protease cathepsin S (Cat S), one of the most potent mammalian elastases known. In contrast, atheromata have low levels of the endogenous Cat S inhibitor cystatin C compared with normal ...
