Inbred Strains of Rats

Behavior Genetics, 1979
The first listing of inbred strains of rats was by Billingham and Silvers (1959). This is the fifth listing and has been substantially revised, although it is heavily dependent on previous listings (Festing and Staats, 1973). In contrast with previous listings, an attempt has been made to cite the original reference for any given strain characteristic.

The genetic control of the antibody response in inbred rats

Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, 1975
The antibody response of genetically inbred rats to poly(Glu52Lys33Tyr15) is controlled by a complex polygenic system which includes at least two autosomal genes and a sex influence, which may also be genetically determined. The genetic control of the quantity, binding constants, and specificity of the antibody formed linked to the major ...

Carcinogenicity of nitrosododecamethyleneimine in NZR/Gd inbred rats

Carcinogenesis, 1984
Nitrosododecamethyleneimine (NDMI) was given to NZR/Gd rats by gavage in olive oil solution, confirming its hepatocarcinogenic activity. Twenty male and 20 female rats received 2.5 mg NDMI twice a week for 52 weeks; a further 10 male rats received 25.0 mg twice a week for 12 weeks. Two-thirds of the animals survived more than 2 years. Of the rats given

Production of Migration Inhibitory Factor in Inbred Rats

International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology, 2009
Strains of genetically inbred rats representative of the known Ag-B groups produced migration inhibitory factor in response to immunization with live bacillus Calmette-Guerin bacilli and intracardiac challenge with old tuberculin; the assays were performed by both in vitro and in vivo methods.

Relationship of growth and blood pressure in inbred rats

American Journal of Physiology-Regulatory, Integrative and Comparative Physiology, 1994
Blood pressure and body weight rise with age, and hypertension is hypothesized to result from an early disorder of growth. We used the statistical technique of spline fitting to examine patterns of growth and rising blood pressure in individual inbred rats of the Wistar-Kyoto, spontaneously hypertensive (SHR), and stroke-prone SHR strains. Our results

The Effect of Gonadectomy on Antibody Production by Inbred Rats

International Archives of Allergy and Applied Immunology, 2009
Highly responding ACI, medium responding WF and low responding F344 inbred rats were gonadectomized or sham-operated at various intervals after birth, and then they were immunized with poly(Glu52Lys33Tyr15). Gonadectomy did not affect antibody production in either males or females.

The uterine response in pregnant inbred and non-inbred rats.

Journal of anatomy, 1992
Comparisons were made between fetal, placental and metrial gland weights and the cellular composition of the placentae and metrial glands of pregnant inbred (Agus), outbred (Agus x Wistar) and random-bred (Wistar) rats. Fetal and placental weight differences between inbred and outbred rats provided evidence of hybrid vigour.

Behavioral and neurochemical differences in an inbred strain of rats

Physiology & Behavior, 1990
The spontaneous motility of 75 Sprague-Dawley rats obtained from an inbred strain was found to vary widely. To test the hypothesis that heterogeneity in motility is accompanied by heterogeneity in neurochemical and vegetative function variables, the median motility score was used to divide the animals into high and low motility groups.

Congenital Hydrocephalus Revealed in the Inbred Rat, LEW/Jms

Neurosurgery, 1983
We studied the development of congenital hydrocephalus found in a colony of an inbred strain of Wistar-Lewis rats (LEW/Jms) at various intervals after birth. The disorder was transmitted as a simple recessive mendelian character. Hydrocephalic neonates were recognized 2 days after birth by stretching of the skin over the head.

Ethanol Clearance in Nine Inbred Rat Strains

Alcoholism: Clinical and Experimental Research, 1984
The rate of ethanol disappearance was determined for each of eight inbred rat strains and the N/Nih line of heterogeneous rats. There are significant differences in ethanol elimination rates in the strains tested. Females have rates significantly different from those of males in five of the eight inbred strains and in the N/Nih line.
