Evergreen broadleaved forests (EBLFs) represent an iconic vegetation type in subtropical montane East Asia, but they are experiencing intensifying anthropogenic pressure and increasing habitat fragmentation. Here, using a dominant and widespread tree species characteristic of East Asian EBLFs, we examine its phylogeographic history and evaluate what it

Inbreeding coefficients and coalescence times
SummaryThis paper describes the relationship between probabilities of identity by descent and the distribution of coalescence times. By using the relationship between coalescence times and identity probabilities, it is possible to extend existing results for inbreeding coefficients in regular systems of mating to find the distribution of coalescence ...

Management and incipient domestication of Chamaedorea tepejilote in agroforestry systems in Mexico
Native wild plants are key elements in addressing global biodiversity loss and supporting sustainable food systems. We investigated how rural communities in Mexico manage Chamaedorea tepejilote, a wild palm with edible male inflorescences, by combining ethnobotanical, genetic, morphological and ecological approaches.

Freshwater turtles play vital roles in maintaining the health of aquatic ecosystems by supporting ecological balance, nutrient cycling and regulating prey populations. Unfortunately, they are among the most threatened species worldwide. Habitat fragmentation, illegal trade, overharvesting for meat, and use in ethnomedicinal practices have severely ...

Inbreeding Depression in Two Mimulus Taxa Measured by Multigenerational Changes in the Inbreeding Coefficient [PDF]
In mixed-mating plant populations, one can estimate the relative fitness of selfed progeny w by measuring the inbreeding coefficient F and selfing rate s of adults of one generation, together with F of adults in the following generation (after selection).

Human activities have shaped and are continuing to influence terrestrial landscapes, creating heterogenous, and often, fragmented landscapes. Generalist species, like the red fox Vulpes vulpes, show high flexibility in habitat use, and occur across the heterogeneous, anthropogenic landscapes of central Europe.

We estimated seasonal space use, cover selection, and resource selection; evaluated gene flow and potential genetic barriers; and assessed cause‐specific survival rates and reproduction of radiomarked gray foxes in Indiana, USA. Our results provide evidence that gray foxes in Indiana are an edge species with relatively large home ranges, relatively low

Three data sets were available: records on conformation and coat traits for the arctic fox from one farm (5 540 observations, collected between 1983 and 1997), and the same traits for the silver fox from three farms (8 199 observations, collected between

Understanding natal emigration in group‐living carnivores
Dispersal is a key ecological and evolutionary process, yet drivers of variation in emigration under human‐modified conditions remain understudied. Using a novel genetic approach applied to harvested grey wolves in Idaho, USA, we found that prey availability and population density shape natal emigration patterns in a cooperative breeder.

Commonly used genomic estimators of individual inbreeding in livestock
: Management of inbreeding is one of the crucial parts of breeding programs in livestock populations. Traditionally, the inbreeding coefficient is calculated using pedigree data; however, it can also be estimated from genomic data.
