Tidal double detonation: a new mechanism for a thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf induced by a tidal disruption event [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
We suggest "tidal double detonation": a new mechanism for a thermonuclear explosion of a white dwarf (WD) induced by a tidal disruption event (TDE). Tidal detonation is also a WD explosion induced by a TDE. In this case, helium (He) and carbon-oxygen (CO) detonation waves incinerate He~WD and CO~WD, respectively.

Innovative Approach to Recycle Lithium‐Ion Battery Electrolytes via Sequential Chemical Processes

open access: yesAdvanced Energy Materials, EarlyView.
A chemical separation method is developed to recycle and purify nonaqueous electrolytes from spent lithium‐ion batteries. The new process consists of a sequence of precipitation in tandem with each distillation and solvent‐assisted vacuum extraction to obtain high‐quality electrolyte precursors.

Electrochemical Incineration of Wastes [PDF]

open access: yesSAE Technical Paper Series, 1989
The novel technology of waste removal in space vehicles by electrochemical methods is presented to convert wastes into chemicals that can be eventually recycled. The important consideration for waste oxidation is to select a right kind of electrode (anode) material that should be stable under anodic conditions and also a poor electrocatalyst for oxygen

Exploiting CO2‐Derived Carbon in Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesAdvanced Energy and Sustainability Research, EarlyView.
In this work, a carbon nanomaterial (CNM) extracted from CO2 reduction treatment is used as the conductive additive in lithium‐ion battery graphite anodes and LiFePO4 cathodes. The electrodes are produced by casting, using both sodium alginate as a green, water‐soluble, alternative binder.

Safety Concerns for the Management of End‐of‐Life Lithium‐Ion Batteries

open access: yesGlobal Challenges, Volume 6, Issue 12, December 2022., 2022
Increasing end‐of‐life lithium‐ion battery quantities makes closed‐loop supply chains noteworthy to help maintain continuity of material sources. There are safety issues in these closed loop processes. Specific research questions are proposed based on the technology–organization–environment framework according to analysis of safety factors across ...
