The Ins and Outs of Top Income Mobility [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2013
This paper is concerned with the question of whether top income earners are permanently there or only temporarily receive the highest incomes. How much mobility is there at the top of the income distribution, and how has mobility changed over time? The paper makes both a methodological and an empirical contribution to answering these questions.

The impact of taxes on income mobility [PDF]

open access: yesInternational Tax and Public Finance, 2017
This paper investigates how taxes affect relative mobility in the income distribution in the USA. Panel data for continuously married households drawn from the PSID between 1967 and 1996 are employed to analyse the relationship between marginal tax rates and the probability of staying in the same income decile. Exogenous variation in marginal tax rates

Regional disparities in Social Mobility of India [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Rapid rise in income inequality in India is a serious concern. While the emphasis is on inclusive growth, it seems difficult to tackle the problem without looking at the intricacies of the problem. The Social Mobility Index is an important tool that focuses on bringing long-term equality by identifying priority policy areas in the country.

Income Mobility, Income Inequality and Mortality in the U.S.

open access: yes, 2018
We assess the magnitude of the association between intergenerational income mobility and US adult mortality by gender, age group, race/ethnicity and the causes of death. We use a data set from The Health Inequality Project and CDC mortality data at the county level.

On the Magnitude of Income Mobility in Germany [PDF]

This paper documents the magnitude of income mobility in Germany and its distribution across different income positions, using data from the German Socio-Economic Panel. The suggested graphical approach makes it straightforward to identify the portions of the distribution that have the largest impact on aggregate indices a la Fields and Ok, and hence ...

Food Income and the Evolution of Forager Mobility [PDF]

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2019

Intergenerational Income Mobility in Urban China [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2010
This paper estimates the intergenerational income elasticity for urban China, paying careful attention to the potential biases induced by income fluctuations and life cycle effects. Our preferred estimate indicates that the intergenerational income elasticity for father–son is 0.63.

World income distribution and mobility

open access: yesPhysics Procedia, 2010
AbstractIn this paper, we show that over the period 1970-2007, the world income distribution expressed in terms of GDP per capita invariably scales down as an exponential law. To visualize dynamical characteristics behind this macro-stability, we use a clock form to present the GDP per capita and rank of the 163 countries over 38 years. Correspondingly,

Intergenerational mobility measures in a bivariate normal model [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2017
We model the joint log-income distribution of parents and children and derive analytic expressions for canonical relative and absolute intergenerational mobility measures. We find that both types of mobility measures can be expressed as a function of the other.
