Motor‐Free Soft Robots for Cancer Detection, Surgery, and In Situ Bioprinting

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Novel motor‐free soft robots for cancer detection, surgery, and in situ bioprinting–are presented. This master‐slave system is constructed from soft fibrous syringe architectures, removing the need for electrical motors and complex control mechanisms, while reducing the physical tremors.

KDSM: An uplift modeling framework based on knowledge distillation and sample matching [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Uplift modeling aims to estimate the treatment effect on individuals, widely applied in the e-commerce platform to target persuadable customers and maximize the return of marketing activities. Among the existing uplift modeling methods, tree-based methods are adept at fitting increment and generalization, while neural-network-based models excel at ...

Synthetic Control of Water‐Stable Hybrid Perovskitoid Semiconductors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Hybrid metal‐halide perovskites are promising semiconductors for optoelectronics, yet their water stability is problematic. A new synthesis method is developed using lead iodide and cysteamine under various pH conditions, forming stable perovskitoid structures.

A Bio‐Inspired Perspective on Materials Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective discusses natural materials as inspiration for sustainable engineering designs and the processing of materials. First, circularity, longevity, parsimony, and activity are presented as essential material paradigms. The perspective then uses many examples of natural and technical materials to introduce principles such as oligo ...

Extremely Fast Decision Tree [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2018
We introduce a novel incremental decision tree learning algorithm, Hoeffding Anytime Tree, that is statistically more efficient than the current state-of-the-art, Hoeffding Tree. We demonstrate that an implementation of Hoeffding Anytime Tree---"Extremely Fast Decision Tree", a minor modification to the MOA implementation of Hoeffding Tree---obtains ...

Efficient Autonomous Dew Water Harvesting by Laser Micropatterning: Superhydrophilic and High Emissivity Robust Grooved Metallic Surfaces Enabling Filmwise Condensation and Radiative Cooling

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Laser micropatterning is presented as a promising technology in the search for autonomous dew water harvesting materials. Laser‐grooved metallic surfaces achieve simultaneously high infrared emissivity and superhydrophilicity, which gives them self‐cooling properties under atmospheric radiative deficit and the ability to condense water in an efficient ...

Predicting Facial Biotypes Using Continuous Bayesian Network Classifiers

open access: yesComplexity, 2018
Bayesian networks are useful machine learning techniques that are able to combine quantitative modeling, through probability theory, with qualitative modeling, through graph theory for visualization.

Robust optimization with incremental recourse [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2013
In this paper, we consider an adaptive approach to address optimization problems with uncertain cost parameters. Here, the decision maker selects an initial decision, observes the realization of the uncertain cost parameters, and then is permitted to modify the initial decision.

Traversing the Periodic Table through Phase‐Separating Nanoreactors

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Centimeter‐scale arrays of single nanoparticles, generated through either Dip Pen Nanolithography or Polymer Pen Lithography, allow for the discovery of novel nanomaterials at an unprecedented scale. The development of phase‐separating hydrophobic nanoreactors bypasses element‐specific chemistry limitations, enabling the synthesis of polyelemental ...

Cost-effectiveness analysis of two-way texting for post-operative follow-up in Zimbabwe's voluntary medical male circumcision program.

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2020
ObjectiveAlthough adverse events (AEs) following voluntary medical male circumcision (VMMC) are rare, their prompt ascertainment and management is a marker of quality care.
