A new type of synaptic contact has been found in Aplysia californica, in which a post-synaptic spine extensively invaginates the pre-synaptic element. The post-synaptic spine, usually less than 0.25 micrometer in diameter, may protrude up to 2 micrometer into the pre-synaptic element.

Indentation of a rigid/plastic material by a conical indenter
Journal of the Mechanics and Physics of Solids, 1963Abstract Results of a numerical investigation of the title problem are presented. The indented material is assumed to obey the Tresca yield criterion and the associated flow rule. Solutions which satisfy the conditions of geometric similarity have been obtained for cones of semi-angle 90° (flat punch), 80°, 70°, 60° and 52.5°, when the stress ...

Effect of Indenter Materials on Indentation Fracture of Alumina Ceramics
Key Engineering Materials, 2005The present study describes the effect of indenter materials on Hertzian cracking behavior of alumina ceramics in sphere indentation. Numerical analysis (FEM) was carried out to investigate the influence of the frictional resistance at the interface due to the elastic mismatch between the indenter and the flat specimen on the stress distribution near ...

Indentation Tonometry of Breasts
Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, 1979We present an indentation tonometer for use in measuring the softness or firmness of human, female breasts. It provides objective measurements which are consistently reproducible.

Three-Dimensional Confocal Microscopy Indentation Method for Hydrogel Elasticity Measurement.
Langmuir, 2015The stiffness of the extracellular matrix (ECM) plays an important role in controlling cell functions. As an alternative to the ECM, hydrogels of tunable elasticity are widely used for in vitro cell mechanobiology studies.

A numerical study of indentation using indenters of different geometry
Journal of Materials Research, 2004Finite element simulation of the Berkovich, Vickers, Knoop, and cone indenters was carried out for the indentation of elastic–plastic material. To fix the semiapex angle of the cone, several rules of equivalence were used and examined. Despite the asymmetry and differences in the stress and strain fields, it was established that for the Berkovich and ...

Deformation of Amalgam by Indenters
Journal of Dental Research, 1968Using steel spherical indenters, the relationship between indentation diameter and load was determined for a mature amalgam. The form of this relationship allowed the regions of elastic and plastic deformation to be identified; hence, Young's modulus and yield point could be calculated. Local contact stresses in the mouth also were estimated.
