INDEPENDENCE OF IRRELEVANT ALTERNATIVES AND FUZZY ARROW'S THEOREM [PDF]

open access: possibleNew Mathematics and Natural Computation, 2012
The literature involving fuzzy Arrow results uses the same independence of irrelevant alternatives condition. We introduce three other types of independence of irrelevant alternative conditions and show that they can be profitably used in the examination of Arrow's theorem. We also generalize some known nondictatorship results.

Testing for Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives

Sociological Methods & Research, 1998
In a recent article, Zhang and Hoffman discuss the use of discrete choice logit models in sociological research. In the present article, the authors estimate a multinomial logit model of U.K. Magistrates Courts sentencing using a data set collected by the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO) and test the independence

Strategy-Proofness, Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives, and Majority Rule

American Economic Review: Insights, 2020
We show that strategy-proofness, the Pareto principle, anonymity, neutrality, independence of irrelevant alternatives, and decisiveness uniquely characterize majority rule on any domain of preferences for which there exists a voting rule satisfying these axioms. In our formulation, strategy-proofness includes manipulations by coalitions.

Revealed altruism without independence of irrelevant alternatives

Proceedings of the Behavioral and Quantitative Game Theory: Conference on Future Directions, 2010
Revealed altruism theory (Cox, Friedman, and Sadiraj, 2008) is a theory of reciprocity that is grounded in neoclassical preference theory. The unconditional preferences included in revealed altruism (RA) theory are neoclassical; they satisfy the generalized axiom of revealed preference (GARP) and are independent of irrelevant alternatives.

A defense of Arrow’s independence of irrelevant alternatives

Public Choice, 2018
Since the publication of Social Choice and Individual Values, Kenneth Arrow’s independence of irrelevant alternatives (IIA) axiom has drawn criticism for being too strong a requirement of a collective choice rule. In this article, we detail and counter some of the criticisms.
