We tested dogs for a violation of independence from irrelevant alternatives, which would indicate irrational behavior. In Experiment 1, we offered 10 dogs' choices among alternative passages. The target passage led to more food than the competitor passage but required dogs to enter a narrower passage.

On the Impact of Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives [PDF]
On several classes of n-person NTU games that have at least one Shapley NTU value, Aumann characterized this solution by six axioms: Non-emptiness, efficiency, unanimity, scale covariance, conditional additivity, and independence of irrelevant alternatives (IIA).

Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives in Engineering Design
Volume 2A: 40th Design Automation Conference, 2014When discussing Arrow’s Impossibility Theorem (AIT) in engineering design, we find that one condition, Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives (IIA), has been misunderstood generally. In this paper, two types of IIA are distinguished. One is based on Kenneth Arrow (IIA-A) that concerns the rationality condition of a collective choice rule (CCR ...

Testing for Independence of Irrelevant Alternatives: Some Empirical Results
1994We estimate a multinomial Logit (MNL) model of U.K. Magistrates' Courts sentencing using a data set collected by the National Association for the Care and Resettlement of Offenders (NACRO) and test the independence of irrelevant alternatives (IIA) property using six tests.

Discrete spatial choice and the axiom of independence from irrelevant alternatives
Socio-Economic Planning Sciences, 1988Abstract The assumption of the independence from irrelevant alternatives (IIA) simplifies the representation of the choice decision. However, this assumption is particularly problematic for choices in a spatial context. Unequal substitutability can lead to systematically misleading results.
