Biological indicators - species
2012The assessment of complete levels of species richness is time intensive and expensive, potentially consuming limited resources for conservation action. Biologists have found that some smaller groups of species can be used as indicators of the total number of species, while other groups seem unrelated to the complete list of species in a region.

An assessment of the dependence of evenness indices on species richness
Journal of Theoretical Biology, 2006Evenness is the component of species diversity that was built to be mathematically independent from species richness. Yet, earlier work questioned the generality of this independence. However, this earlier work involved only a few relative abundance distributions (RADs), very limited gradients of species richness, or evenness indices, such as Pielou's ...

Herpetological Species as Paleoenvironmental Indicators
1998In Chapter 5 we have seen that Pleistocene herpetofaunas are often used to suggest paleoenvironmental conditions. The present chapter discusses the validity of this use. With the exception of behavioral responses (and a few quasi-physiological adaptations in reptiles), herpetological species are poorly adapted to resist temperature changes.
