Time after time – circadian clocks through the lens of oscillator theory

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Oscillator theory bridges physics and circadian biology. Damped oscillators require external drivers, while limit cycles emerge from delayed feedback and nonlinearities. Coupling enables tissue‐level coherence, and entrainment aligns internal clocks with environmental cues.

Measurement and identification of positive plant interactions: Overview and new perspective [PDF]

open access: yesNetwork Biology, 2017
Positive interactions play a key role in plant communities. The present study discusses measurement/identification methods of positive plant interactions.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Tau acetylation at K331 has limited impact on tau pathology in vivo

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
We mapped tau post‐translational modifications in humanized MAPT knock‐in mice and in amyloid‐bearing double knock‐in mice. Acetylation within the repeat domain, particularly around K331, showed modest increases under amyloid pathology. To test functional relevance, we generated MAPTK331Q knock‐in mice.

Dimensionality reduction of optimization problems using variance based sensitivity analysis [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
We propose a new interaction index derived from the computation of Sobol indices. In optimization, interaction index can be used to detect lack of interaction among input parameters.

Gut microbiome and aging—A dynamic interplay of microbes, metabolites, and the immune system

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Age‐dependent shifts in microbial communities engender shifts in microbial metabolite profiles. These in turn drive shifts in barrier surface permeability of the gut and brain and induce immune activation. When paired with preexisting age‐related chronic inflammation this increases the risk of neuroinflammation and neurodegenerative diseases.

Singing streams: Describing freshwater soundscapes with the help of acoustic indices

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, 2020
Understanding soundscapes, that is, the totality of sounds within a location, helps to assess nature in a more holistic way, providing a novel approach to investigating ecosystems.

Tits indices over semilocal rings

open access: yes, 2010
We give a simplified proof of Tits' classification of semisimple algebraic groups that remains valid over semilocal rings. In particular, we provide explicit necessary and sufficient conditions that anisotropic groups of a given type appear as ...

Subjective Indicators [PDF]

open access: yesSSRN Electronic Journal, 2009
"Subjective indicators have been proven to possess predictive power for a large array of social and economic outcomes. However, most of these measures face serious psychometric shortcomings, namely that the items used are not psychometrically investigated.
