Intraspecific variation of cochlear morphology in bowhead and beluga whales

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The bony labyrinth of the petrosal bone, a distinctive feature of mammal skulls, is often identified in micro‐computed tomography imaging to infer species' physiological and ecological traits. When done as part of a comparative study, one individual specimen is normally considered representative of a species, and intraspecific variation is ...

Integrated lncRNA and mRNA Transcriptome Analyses of IGF1 and IGF2 Stimulated Ovaries Reveal Genes and Pathways Potentially Associated with Ovarian Development and Oocyte Maturation in Golden Pompano (Trachinotus ovatus)

open access: yesAnimals
Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) play crucial roles in the regulation of animal growth and reproduction. However, the functional and regulatory mechanisms underlying ovarian growth and oocyte maturation in teleosts remain unclear.

Managing soil biodiversity: The New Zealand experience [PDF]

open access: yes, 2004
Species diversity is a very important component of a healthy soil ecosystem, and a necessary condition for long-term sustainable development. However, it is widely recognised that soil degradation and species extinction are on the increase in New Zealand,

Benthic non-indigenous species among indigenous species and their habitat preferences in Puck Bay (southern Baltic Sea) [PDF]

open access: yesOCEANOLOGIA, 2014
To date 11 non-indigenous benthic taxa have been reported in Puck Bay (southern Baltic Sea). Five of the 34 taxa forming the soft bottom communities are regarded as non-indigenous to this area. They are Marenzelleria spp., Mya arenaria, Potamopyrgus antipodarum, Gammarus tigrinus and Amphibalanus improvisus.

Ontogenetic changes and sexual dimorphism in the cranium and mandible of the Atlantic walrus (Odobenus rosmarus rosmarus L.)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Walruses have been an important subsistence and cultural resource for humans and have been exploited for millennia across their distribution. This exploitation has contributed to severe declines in several populations and local extirpations.

Patterns of past and recent conversion of indigenous grasslands in the South Island, New Zealand [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
We used recent satellite imagery to quantify the extent, type, and rate of conversion of remaining indigenous grasslands in the inland eastern South Island of New Zealand in recent years.

Neuroanatomical diversity in Teleocichla with new volumetric and histological insights into the encephalon of Teleocichla monogramma Kullander 1988

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Teleocichla comprises small cichlids that inhabit the rapid streams of Amazonian rivers; however, there has been limited research on their encephalon morphology. This study examined the neuroanatomy of four species, focusing on volumetric measurements of their encephalon subregions, and providing a histological description of the encephalon of

Gleaning the Rocky Shore? 2500 Years of Coastal Resource Use at Red Bluff 1, GunaiKurnai Country, SE Australia

open access: yesArchaeology in Oceania, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT Shell middens in Gippsland along the eastern half of Victoria's coastline have usually been characterised as small, short‐duration camp sites with relatively low shell densities and low taxonomic diversity. Here we present new excavation results from a dense, high‐diversity site at Red Bluff near the eastern end of GunaiKurnai Country, a ...

Screening for qRT-PCR Internal Reference Genes in Clarias fuscus

open access: yesProgress in Fishery Sciences
Quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) is one of the most widely used molecular techniques, which allows the detection and quantification of gene expression due to its high sensitivity, specificity, and reproducibility.
