Individual structural parameters of trees, such as forest stand tree height and biomass, serve as the foundation for monitoring of dynamic changes in forest resources. Individual tree structural parameters are closely related to individual tree crown segmentation.

The Influence of Vegetation Characteristics on Individual Tree Segmentation Methods with Airborne LiDAR Data [PDF]
This study investigated the effects of forest type, leaf area index (LAI), canopy cover (CC), tree density (TD), and the coefficient of variation of tree height (CVTH) on the accuracy of different individual tree segmentation methods (i.e., canopy height model, pit-free canopy height model (PFCHM), point cloud, and layer stacking seed point) with LiDAR

Accurate identification and segmentation of individual tree points are crucial for assessing forest spatial distribution, understanding tree growth and structure, and managing forest resources. Traditional methods based on Canopy Height Models (CHM) are simple yet prone to over- and/or under-segmentation.

Individual tree segmentation in deciduous forests using geodesic voting
2015 IEEE International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS), 2015Airborne Laser Scanning (ALS) has been widely used to survey forest areas. The extraction (segmentation) of individual trees from ALS point clouds is a prerequisite step for tree biophysical parameter estimation. For this purpose, we develop and evaluate a graph based segmentation algorithm adapted to deciduous forests scanned with high density LiDAR (~

Individual Tree Segmentation Based on Mean Shift and Crown Shape Model for Temperate Forest
IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, 2021Light detection and ranging (LiDAR) provides high-resolution geometric information for monitoring forests at individual tree crown (ITC) level. An important task for ITC delineation is segmentation, and previous studies showed that the adaptive 3-D mean shift (AMS3D) algorithm provides effective results.

Scale-Adaptive Segmentation and Recognition of Individual Trees Based on LiDAR Data
2007A scale-adaptive method for tree segmentation and recognition based on the LiDAR height data is described. The proposed method uses an isotropic matched filtering operator optimized for the fast and reliable detection of local and multiple objects. Sequential local maxima of this operator indicate the centers of potential objects of interest such as ...

Structure-Preserving Segmentation of Individual Tree Crowns by Brownian Motion
2003A fast, simple and easy to implement segmentation method is presented. A particle is walking in the image in the fashion of a Brownian motion to create the segments. Using this method, it is possible to segment the image and find the inner structure of the segment at the same time. The inner structure could be useful for further analysis.

A supervoxel approach to the segmentation of individual trees from LiDAR point clouds
Remote Sensing Letters, 2018This letter aims to propose an automatic method for the segmentation of street trees from LiDAR point clouds. The first step is to extract tree points to reduce the scale of data to be processed. The second step is to formulate supervoxels for grouping homogeneous points.
