Impact of Variable Atmospheric and Oceanic Form Drag on Simulations of Arctic Sea Ice [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Over Arctic sea ice, pressure ridges and floe and melt pond edges all introduce discrete obstructions to the flow of air or water past the ice and are a source of form drag.

Turning Light Into Matter: Programmable Microstructures Via Dose Control in Two‐Photon Polymerization

open access: yesAdvanced Optical Materials, EarlyView.
This work augments two‐photon polymerization with point‐wise dose control, enabling structures with heterogeneous material properties such as refractive index. An open source toolbox and superior calibration methodology for the refractive index pave the way for bio‐mimicking or numerically optimized structure designs, and enhance the synergy between 3D

Strategies for in-orbit calibration of drag-free control systems [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Drag-Free Satellites (DFS) are a class of scientific satellite missions designed for research on fundamental physics as well as geodesy. They consist, basically, of a small inner satellite (test mass) located in a cavity inside a larger satellite, the ...

Collision‐Resilient Winged Drones Enabled by Tensegrity Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Based on structures of birds such as the woodpeck, this article presents the collision‐resilient aerial robot, SWIFT. SWIFT leverages tensegrity structures in the fuselage and wings which allow it to undergo large deformations in a crash, without sustaining damage. Experiments show that SWIFT can reduce impact forces by 70% over conventional structures.

Analysis and Suppression Method of Drag Torque in Wide-Speed No-Load Wet Clutch

open access: yesActuators
Under no-load conditions, the wet clutch of vehicles generates drag torque across a wide speed range, which increases power loss in the transmission system and significantly impacts its efficiency and reliability.

Evaluation of nacelle drag using Computational Fluid Dynamics [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Aerospace Technology and Management, 2010
Thrust and drag components must be defined and properly accounted in order to estimate aircraft performance, and this hard task is particularty essential for propulsion system where drag components are functions of engine operating conditions.

Case study of wave dependent drag coefficient in the Baltic Sea

open access: yesMeteorologische Zeitschrift, 2000
Proper estimation of air flow over sea waves plays a key role in wave, storm surge, wind field prediction. Most hydrological models assume the drag coefficient Cd to be dependent only on the local wind speed. However this is a simplification.

Nonlocomotory Robotic Strategies for Dynamic Rotation Control in Terrestrial Robots: A Review

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
Terrestrial robots increasingly require rapid body rotation to maintain stability and agility in complex environments. This review shows nonlocomotory rotational control strategies that operate without ground contact, including reaction wheels, tails, bars, limbs, and thrusters.

Multimodal Locomotion in Insect‐Inspired Microrobots: A Review of Strategies for Aerial, Surface, Aquatic, and Interfacial Motion

open access: yesAdvanced Robotics Research, EarlyView.
This review identifies key design considerations for insect‐inspired microrobots capable of multimodal locomotion. To draw inspiration, biological and robotic strategies for moving in air, on water surfaces, and underwater are examined, along with approaches for crossing the air–water interface.
