Bilateral Orbital Hemorrhage Induced by Labor

We describe a woman in whom bilateral orbital hemorrhage occurred during labor. She developed sudden proptosis and complete loss of vision bilaterally. After a stillbirth, she underwent total hysterectomy because of atonic uterus and postpartum hemorrhage. The location of the hematomas was confirmed by magnetic resonance imaging.

Inducing Labor by Rupturing Membranes

Rupturing the membranes usually induces labor and carries little risk. Of 1,235 patients subjected to amniotomy, 89 percent were in labor in four hours, and only 3 percent required oxytocin to start contractions. Although complications are few, physicians should not rupture the membranes simply for their own or the patient's convenience.
