Extension of Gutenberg-Richter Distribution to Mw -1.3, No Lower Limit in Sight [PDF]

open access: yes, 2009
With twelve years of seismic data from TauTona Gold Mine, South Africa, we show that mining-induced earthquakes follow the Gutenberg-Richter relation with no scale break down to the completeness level of the catalog, at moment magnitude MW −1.3.

Key strata of mining-induced seismicity in overburden rocks in coal mines and the energy-releasing mechanism of its fracture

open access: yesMeitan xuebao
Mining-induced seismicity in strata has become one of the main dynamic phenomena in some coal mines. The theoretical identification of the main controlling rock stratum where mining-induced seismicity occurs is the basis for accurate prevention and ...

Impact of global seismicity on sea level change assessment

open access: yes, 2005
We analyze the effect of seismic activity on sealevel variations, by computing the time-dependent vertical crustal movement and geoid change due to coseismic deformations and postseismic relaxation effects.

On the origin of exponential growth in induced earthquakes in Groningen [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
The Groningen gas field shows exponential growth in earthquakes event counts around a magnitude M1 with a doubling time of 6-9 years since 2001. This behavior is identified with dimensionless curvature in land subsidence, which has been evolving at a ...

Importance of direct and indirect triggered seismicity

open access: yes, 2003
Using the simple ETAS branching model of seismicity, which assumes that each earthquake can trigger other earthquakes, we quantify the role played by the cascade of triggered seismicity in controlling the rate of aftershock decay as well as the overall ...

Seismic hazard from natural and induced seismicity: a comparison for Italy [PDF]

open access: yes, 2015
The seismic hazard resulting from seismicity induced by human activity is not yet regulated in Italy. The presence of a significant natural seismicity complicates the differentiation of events possibly induced by human ...

Comparison of reservoir-induced crustal motion study of Koyna-Warna & Tehri Dam

open access: yesResults in Earth Sciences
Earthquake triggering is a phenomenon characterized by the advancement or delay of the initial occurrence of an earthquake in nearby or distant locations.

Frictional Stabilities on Induced Earthquake Fault Planes at Fox Creek, Alberta: A Pore Fluid Pressure Dilemma

open access: yes, 2019
Earthquakes induced during hydraulic fracturing operations have occurred in a number of locales. However, in-situ studies aimed to discern the triggering mechanism remains exclusively statistical in their nature.

Self‐Similarity of Seismic Moment Release to Volume Change Scaling for Volcanoes: A Comparison With Injection‐Induced Seismicity

open access: yesGeophysical Research Letters, 2022
Estimates of intruded magma volume are critical for forecasting volcanic unrest. Geodetic modeling can provide such estimates but is of limited use in submarine and highly vegetated settings.

Interpreting intraplate tectonics for seismic hazard : a UK historical perspective [PDF]

open access: yes, 2012
It is notoriously difficult to construct seismic source models for probabilistic seismic hazard assessment in intraplate areas on the basis of geological information, and many practitioners have given up the task in favour of purely seismicity-based ...
