Urticaria, often referred to as hives, is one of the most commonly diagnosed dermatologic disorders in emergency departments and urgent care facilities. Due to the wide variety of manifestations and etiologies, it is of great importance to rapidly recognize the condition, work up potential causes, and institute appropriate clinical treatment.

Cyclophosphamide-Induced Urticaria
Archives of Internal Medicine, 1978A patient receiving adjuvant chemoimmunotherapy for breast carcinoma developed urticaria secondary to cyclophosphamide, one of the drugs of the chemotherapy regimen. Chlorambucil, another alkylating agent, was substituted with no cross-sensitivity noted. ( Arch Intern Med 138:1725-1726, 1978)

Cold urticaria is characterized by the development of urticaria, usually superficial and/or angioedematous reaction after cold contact. It was found predominantly in young women. The diagnosis is based on the history and ice cube test. Patients with a negative ice cube test may have represented systemic cold urticaria (atypical acquired cold urticaria)
