For high-risk pregnancies, modern obstetrical practice demands prompt recognition and judicious but active management. The ability of the obstetrician to control when, where, and how a particular labor and delivery may occur has reduced the fetal and maternal risks of the major complications of late pregnancy.

Labor Induction with Prostaglandins
Acta Obstetricia et Gynecologica Scandinavica, 1983Prostaglandins E2 and F2 alpha have been used for labor induction for more than 10 years. Many investigations have shown that these prostaglandins are effective, and within certain dosage schedules, safe oxytocics, even though the systemic administration is accompanied by side effects, mainly from the gastro-intestinal tract.

Induction of Labor with Prostaglandin
Obstetrics & Gynecology, 197140 patients received either prostaglandin (PG)F2alpha or oxytocin to induce term labor. The 2 groups were comparable with respect to cervical status prior to dilatation fetal station and parity. The mean maximum dose for oxytocin was 8.2 mU/min for the group with minimal cervical dilatation and 5.6 mU for those with more dilatation.

Abstract This is a report of 1,000 clective inductions of labor performed in healthy multipara or near term with a vertex presentation which was at least partially engaged and a cervix that was at least 2 cm. dilated at the internal os. The maternal and fetal results obtained in these cases are compared with those of an equal number of multiparas who
