Fuzzy Control Decision-Making in Industrial Engineering: Mechanisms, Scenarios and Optimization Approaches

open access: yesApplied Sciences
Fuzzy control decision-making (FCDM) is an intelligent paradigm that leverages linguistic variables to model knowledge, explicitly addressing epistemic uncertainty (incomplete system knowledge) and aleatoric uncertainty (stochastic noise), thereby ...

Reliable Autonomous Production Systems: Combining Industrial Engineering Methods and Situation Awareness Modelling in Critical Realist Design of Autonomous Production Systems

open access: yesSystems, 2018
Autonomous production needs to be reliable. Outputs from reliable production systems consistently conform to performance requirements. By contrast, outputs from unreliable production systems often do not conform to performance requirements.

Fostering Innovation: Streamlining Magnetocaloric Materials Research by Digitalization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Magnetocaloric cooling (MCE) is an environmentally friendly refrigeration method with great potential. Optimizing MCE materials involves the preparation and screening of large quantities of samples, which in turn generates a large amount of data. A digitalization approach is presented that uses ontologies, knowledge graphs, and digital workflows to ...

Is an Apple an Orange? A Large Language Model Benchmark for Candidate Term Extraction and Subclass Decisions Against Upper Ontologies in Engineering and Materials Science

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Building machine‐readable vocabularies for materials science is slow, expert‐driven work. This study benchmarks 13 large language models on two of its first steps: finding candidate terms in engineering articles and deciding where they belong in a class hierarchy.

Multimodal Data‐Driven Microstructure Characterization

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
A self‐consistent autonomous workflow for EBSP‐based microstructure segmentation by integrating PCA, GMM clustering, and cNMF with information‐theoretic parameter selection, requiring no user input. An optimal ROI size related to characteristic grain size is identified.

Residential recycling: an Industrial Engineering approach to strategic waste collection [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Thesis (B Eng. (Industrial and Systems Engineering))--University of Pretoria, 2011.Residential recycling has become something of a proverbial carrot or stick situation: either residents have the moral motivation to recycle, the carrot, or are forced to ...

Influence of Test Temperature and Test Frequency on Fatigue Life of Aluminum Alloy EN AW‐2618A

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
The influence of test temperature and test frequency on the fatigue life of EN AW‐2618A is investigated. High‐cycle fatigue tests are performed at different test temperatures and frequencies on the 1000 h/230°C overaged state. Both test parameters reduce fatigue life due to time‐dependent damage mechanisms.
