Redundancy Ethernet in Industrial Automation

2005 IEEE Conference on Emerging Technologies and Factory Automation, 2006
This article summarizes the requirements for communication redundancy in the different market sectors for industrial automation. It reviews the different solutions for using standard Ethernet to fulfill requirements and proposes more special extensions to Ethernet to obtain this. The path forward is sketched. Focus is on ideas and concerns that must be

Multicast filtering in industrial Ethernet networks

2010 IEEE International Workshop on Factory Communication Systems Proceedings, 2010
The need for efficient multicast filtering in Industrial Ethernet networks will most likely rise as a result of its increased usage of multicast protocols and its increasing network capacity. The current support for multicast filtering in industrial Ethernet networks is somewhat limited since the available functionality for handling of L2 multicast is ...

Measuring latencies over industrial Ethernet switches

2013 21st Telecommunications Forum Telfor (TELFOR), 2013
In this paper we experiment with a testbed consisting of an array of industrial switches to examine the impact of daisy chaining to frame forwarding performance. Using a customized EtherCAT master, a high precision measurement loop was created. Tests in different traffic situations and chain lengths were performed.

Priority scheduling in switched industrial ethernet

Proceedings of the 2005, American Control Conference, 2005., 2005
Switched Ethernet is increasingly advocated as a solution for industrial communication. One typical requirement in such fields is the need to guarantee deterministic transfer delay for cyclic control data, but traditional Ethernet communication does not provide priority feature for industrial data transfer.

Switch based industrial Ethernet networks

Computing and Control Engineering, 2003
When Ethernet was first invented by Dr Robert Metcalfe in the mid-1970s, communication at the physical layer was based on coaxial cables. Steadily increasing technical demands in terms of data rates and network topologies have fuelled a continuous evolution in the physics of data transfer.

Real-Time Ethernet - Industry Prospective

Proceedings of the IEEE, 2005
After more than ten years of experience with applications of fieldbus in automation technology, the industry starts to develop and adopt Real-Time Ethernet (RTE) solutions. There already exists now more than ten proposed solutions. IEC standards are trying to give a guideline and selection criteria based on recognized indicators for the user.

Ethernet based industry automation using FPGA

2013 Africon, 2013
The aim of this work is to develop an embedded system directed at automating appliances in an industry via Ethernet. The system employs server/client architecture; switching commands for the appliances which are connected to the client can be received and displayed at either end.

Ethernet in industrial automation: Overcoming obstacles

Automation and Remote Control, 2016
Ethernet evolution history and data packet assembly in the OSI model are discussed. Limitations impeding Ethernet application in industrial automation are formulated. The paper notes that real-time Ethernet operation requires additional mechanisms which allow to avoid collisions.
