Inertial Confinement Fusion

2021
Inertial confinement fusion, which is another major and equally unsuccessful approach to fusion, is discussed in this chapter. In it a small target filled with deuterium-tritium fuel at high density is imploded in an attempt to create fusion conditions. The most common drivers consist of (multiple) laser beams but beams of particles are also considered.

Inertial Confinement Fusion

1988
Edward Teller has been a strong proponent of harnessing nuclear explosions for peaceful purposes. There are two approaches: Plowshare, which utilizes macro-explosions, and inertial confinement fusion, which utilizes micro-explosions. The development of practical fusion power plants is a principal goal of the inertial program.
