Residual Stress States in Microstructurally Graded PBF–LB/M Austenitic Steel Components

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study examines microstructurally graded 316L rectangular tube profiles fabricated via PBF–LB/M using a dual‐laser system. A 1 kW top‐hat and a 400 W Gaussian laser create distinct grain sizes and crystallographic texture. Mechanical properties are linked to microstructural evolution driven by processing conditions.

Coordinates of Human Visual and Inertial Heading Perception. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Heading estimation involves both inertial and visual cues. Inertial motion is sensed by the labyrinth, somatic sensation by the body, and optic flow by the retina.

Microstructural Evolution and Mechanical Properties of a Medium‐Manganese Steel Manufactured by Laser‐Based Powder Bed Fusion of Metals

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Fe–12Mn–0.2C medium‐manganese steel is processed by laser‐based powder bed fusion of metals using blended as well as pre‐alloyed powder. Various scanning speeds are used to determine the influence of energy deposition rate on microstructure and mechanical properties.

A Comprehensive Review of Additive Manufacturing for Space Applications: Materials, Advances, Challenges, and Future Directions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Additive manufacturing (AM) transforms space hardware by enabling lightweight, high‐performance, and on‐demand production. This review outlines AM processes—powder bed fusion (PBF), directed energy deposition (DED), binder jetting (BJ), sheet lamination (SL), and material extrusion (ME)—applied to propulsion, satellite structures, and thermal devices ...

Efficient and Scalable Radiative Cooling for Photovoltaics Using Solution‐Processable and Solar‐Transparent Mesoporous Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Graded refractive index (GRI) structures are prepared from the layer‐by‐layer spray coating of the mesoporous SiO2 nanoparticles, showing high solar transparency and thermal emissivity. Under outdoor conditions, after 50 days, the GRI‐coated photovoltaics show on average 6.65 ± 1.48 °C lower than that of the non‐coated references, maintaining 80.9 ± 8 ...

The Various Speeds of Lights in Inertial Frames of Reference [PDF]

open access: yesOptics, 2017
The speed of light in empty space was first measured by Roemer in 1676 who also found it faster on approach to its source and slower on recession. James Bradley in 1728 reported the speed of light incident vertically to be higher on approach and slower on recession.

Velocity/Position Integration Formula (II): Application to Inertial Navigation Computation

open access: yes, 2012
Inertial navigation applications are usually referenced to a rotating frame. Consideration of the navigation reference frame rotation in the inertial navigation algorithm design is an important but so far less seriously treated issue, especially for ...
