Coordinates of Human Visual and Inertial Heading Perception. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2015
Heading estimation involves both inertial and visual cues. Inertial motion is sensed by the labyrinth, somatic sensation by the body, and optic flow by the retina.

Toward inertial reference frames with the SIM observatory [PDF]

open access: yesProceedings of the International Astronomical Union, 2009
AbstractThe SIM Lite Observatory is expected to provide a global astrometric reference frame surpassing the 1-μas accuracy threshold in some spherical harmonics. A range of time-varying physical distortions of the reference frame will become observable as large-scale perturbations of the proper motion field.

Design Strategies and Emerging Applications of High‐Performance Flexible Piezoresistive Pressure Sensors

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Flexible piezoresistive pressure sensors underpin wearable and soft electronics. This review links sensing physics, including contact resistance modulation, quantum tunneling and percolation, to unified materials/structure design. We highlight composite and graded architectures, interfacial/porous engineering, and microstructured 3D conductive networks

Lacunae in the philosophical foundations of special relativity

open access: yesOpen Astronomy
Based on the two postulates of the invariance of both the laws of physics and light speed in inertial frames, Einstein revolutionised the prevalent conceptions of space and time in the Special Theory of Relativity, which is not however without ...

Stress and heat flux in non-inertial reference frames

open access: yes, 1997
We compute the stress tensor and the heat flux in a non-inertial reference frame, using the BGK model to any order in the product between the microscopic collision time and the angular velocity of the reference frame, a product that is assumed to be of ...

A Non‐Reciprocal Architected Porous Medium

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In several fluid flow, energy‐dumping, and energy‐harvesting applications, a dominant flow direction or dominant resistance direction is desirable. In this study, we propose a simple modular geometry that doubles flow resistance in one direction relative to the opposite direction, while maintaining laminar viscous flow.

The error of L5/S1 joint moment calculation in a body-centered non-inertial reference frame when the fictitious force is ignored

open access: yes, 2013
In ergonomics studies, linked segment models are commonly used for estimating dynamic L5/S1 joint moments during lifting tasks. The kinematics data input to these models are with respect to an arbitrary stationary reference frame.

Memristor‐Driven Active‐Matrix Organic Light‐Emitting Diode for Energy Efficient and High‐Resolution Displays

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates that memristors can replace conventional 2T–1C driving circuits with simplified 1T–1 m architectures by exploiting resistance switching. With ultra‐low switching voltages (< ±0.2 V) and multi‐level resistance states, the memristors precisely control the current injected into organic light‐emitting diodes (OLEDs).

Nanoparticle Shape Dictates Catalytic Performance in Selective Hydrogenation of Butadiene Over Au‐Pd Core‐Shell Nanoparticles

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Controlling the exposed crystal facet of shape‐controlled Au‐Pd core‐shell catalysts though colloidal synthesis enhances their catalytic performance in the industrially relevant selective hydrogenation of butadiene. ABSTRACT Selective hydrogenation of butadiene is a critical step in purification of alkene feedstocks for polymer production and is ...

Locally inertial reference frames in Lorentzian and Riemann‐Cartan spacetimes [PDF]

open access: yesAnnalen der Physik, 2012
AbstractIn this paper the concept of locally inertial reference frames (LIRFs) in Lorentzian and Riemann‐Cartan spacetime structures is scrutinized. A rigorous mathematical definition of a LIRF in both structures is given, something that needs preliminary a clear mathematical distinction between the concepts of observers, reference frames, naturally ...
