Inertial oscillations as deep ocean response to hurricanes

Journal of Oceanography, 2008
We discuss the deep ocean response to passing hurricanes (aka typhoons), which are considered as generators of near-inertial, internal waves. The analysis of data collected in the northwestern parts of the Pacific and Atlantic oceans in the hurricane season permit us to assess the deep ocean response to such a strong atmospheric forcing. A large number

Investigation of the Response of an Hydraulic Servomechanism with Inertial Load

Journal of Mechanical Engineering Science, 1963
The linearized equations and transfer function for a hydraulic servomechanism are considered. It is shown that the simple first-order equation is inadequate to explain the behaviour of the device as observed experimentally. The solution of the third-order equation, obtainable by the inclusion of the effects of leakage and compressibility, provides a ...

Inertial response of variable speed wind turbines

Electric Power Systems Research, 2006
Abstract The increasing penetration of variable speed wind turbines in the electricity grid will result in a reduction of the number of connected conventional power plants. This will lead to a reduction of inertia in the grid, as the rotational speed of a variable speed turbine and the grid are decoupled by a power electronic converter.

Inertially driven transient response in polymeric liquids

Journal of Non-Newtonian Fluid Mechanics, 2009
We report here a computational study, with inertial contributions included, of the time-dependent velocity and shear stress profiles following flow start-up from rest for a polymeric liquid. Earlier workers solved similar fluid-mechanical start-up problems with viscoelastic character represented by a single Maxwell element.

Comparison of inertial response implementations in DFIG-based wind turbines

2011 24th Canadian Conference on Electrical and Computer Engineering(CCECE), 2011
The paper examines two major implementations of inertial response in variable-speed wind turbine generators. Through time-domain simulations, these supplementary loops are compared based on their impact on grid frequency and the wind plant. Testing is performed on an isolated, hydro-dominated power system benchmark, to which a DFIG-based wind plant is ...

Near-Inertial Response of a Salinity-Stratified Ocean

Journal of Physical Oceanography
Abstract We study the near-inertial response of the salinity-stratified north Bay of Bengal to monsoonal wind forcing using 6 years of hourly observations from four moorings. The mean annual energy input from surface winds to near-inertial mixed layer currents is 10–20 kJ m−2, occurring mainly in distinct synoptic “events” from April–September. A total

Inertial water response dominates protein solvation dynamics

Chemical Physics Letters, 2019
Abstract Establishing the mechanism of protein folding and other physiological processes requires a detailed comprehension of protein-solvent interactions. The fastest protein solvation dynamics have not yet been thoroughly investigated due to challenges associated with controlling few-cycle laser pulses and identifying ideal model systems.
