Diffusion-induced bistability of driven nanomechanical resonators [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
We study nanomechanical resonators with frequency fluctuations due to diffusion of absorbed particles. The diffusion depends on the vibration amplitude through inertial effect.

Triggering BESS Inertial Response with Synchronous Machine Measurements [PDF]

open access: yes2018 IEEE Power & Energy Society General Meeting (PESGM), 2018
Synthetic inertia devices must deliver power during maximum RoCoF, which is observed to occur during the first 500 ms post fault. The use of a droop characteristic with a deadband is demonstrated to be unfit for purpose. The ideal response (with present technologies) is demonstrated to be a maximum power ramp in minimum time post fault.

Performance Analysis of Acceleration and Inertial Force of Electromagnetic Suspension Inertial Stabilizer

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2022
In this paper, the structural characteristics of electromagnetic suspension (EMS) inertial stabilizers are analyzed firstly, and then a mechanical analysis of a single mass block and double mass block is carried out.

Control of a Type-IV Wind Turbine With the Capability of Robust Grid-Synchronization and Inertial Response for Weak Grid Stable Operation

open access: yesIEEE Access, 2019
With the increasing penetration of wind power, the effective inertia of the power system reduces. Besides, a series of interactive instability issues including sub-synchronous oscillations and harmonic oscillations were reported due to the weak grid ...

Observation of near-inertial waves in the wake of four typhoons in the northern South China Sea

open access: yesScientific Reports, 2023
Based on the velocity and temperature data recorded by two acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) at a mooring system deployed in the northern South China Sea (SCS), this study investigates the characteristics of near-inertial waves (NIWs) induced by

Sizing of an Energy Storage System for Grid Inertial Response and Primary Frequency Reserve [PDF]

open access: yes, 2016
Large-scale integration of renewable energy sources in power system leads to the replacement of conventional power plants (CPPs) and consequently challenges in power system reliability and security are introduced.

Design, Simulation, and Fabrication of a New Three-Axis Inertial Switch with a Triangular Movable Electrode Structure

open access: yesMicromachines, 2022
A new three-axis inertial switch is proposed. The triangle-structured movable electrode is designed to improve the inertial switch’s dynamic response performance, especially the movable electrode’s dynamic stability performance.

Simultaneous Inertia Contribution and Optimal Grid Utilization with Wind Turbines

open access: yesEnergies, 2019
This paper presents findings of a study on continuous feed-in management and continuous synthetic inertia contribution with wind turbines. A realistic case study, based on real measurements, is outlined. A wind turbine feeds into a weak feeder, such that

Quantitative Control Approach for Wind Turbine Generators to Provide Fast Frequency Response with Guarantee of Rotor Security

open access: yes, 2017
Wind generation is expected to reach substantially higher levels of penetration in the near future. With the converter interface, the rotor inertia of doubly-fed induction generator (DFIG) based wind turbine generator is effectively decoupled from the ...

Granular Impact: A Grain-scale Approach

open access: yes, 2015
This work summarizes a series of studies on two-dimensional granular impact, where an intruding object strikes a granular material at high speed. Many previous studies on granular impact have used a macroscopic force law, which is dominated by an ...
