Al–Cu Composite Casting of Laser‐Deoxidized Copper: Bonding, Interfacial Chemistry, and Thermal Conductivity

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study investigates laser‐based oxide removal of Cu inserts in oxygen‐free conditions and examines long‐term oxidation kinetics and surface chemistry under different atmospheres via X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Al–Cu compound casting with differently oxidized surfaces is performed, and intermetallic phase formation, morphology, and thermal ...

Wheel-Mounted Inertial Datasets

open access: yesScientific Data
A wheel-mounted inertial sensor mitigates inertial drift more effectively than an inertial sensor mounted on the vehicle chassis. Although their usage is increasing, there is no publicly available dataset for wheel-mounted inertial sensors.

Inertial Control of the VIRGO Superattenuator

open access: yes, 1999
The VIRGO superattenuator (SA) is effective in depressing the seismic noise below the thermal noise level above 4 Hz. On the other hand, the residual mirror motion associated to the SA normal modes can saturate the dynamics of the interferometer locking ...

Assessing Altered Coating Adhesion on Plasma‐Deoxidized Surfaces Under Oxygen‐Free Conditions

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
This study demonstrates the effectiveness of atmospheric pressure plasma pretreatment in modifying silicon and stainless steel surfaces to improve adhesion. Argon‐hydrogen plasma increases surface roughness and improves adhesion strength, whereas pure argon results in smoother surfaces and structural changes.

Detection of anticipatory postural adjustments prior to gait initiation using inertial wearable sensors

open access: yesJournal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation, 2011
Background The present study was performed to evaluate and characterize the potential of accelerometers and angular velocity sensors to detect and assess anticipatory postural adjustments (APAs) generated by the first step at the beginning of the gait ...

Evaluating Energy Absorption Performance of Filled Lattice Structures

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Maximum stress must be considered to robustly evaluate energy absorber designs. This approach was applied to compare all types of absorbers in a single Ashby diagram and determine the utility of filling lattice voids with a second material. High‐performance fillers can improve the performance of lattices that are limited by buckling or catastrophic ...

Hidden Markov model-based similarity measure (HMM-SM) for gait quality assessment of lower-limb prosthetic users using inertial sensor signals

open access: yesJournal of NeuroEngineering and Rehabilitation
Background Gait quality indices, such as the Gillette Gait Index or Gait Profile Score (GPS), can provide clinicians with objective, straightforward measures to quantify gait pathology and monitor changes over time.

The Potential Role of Wearable Inertial Sensors in Laboring Women with Walking Epidural Analgesia

open access: yesSensors
There is a growing interest in wearable inertial sensors to monitor and analyze the movements of pregnant women. The noninvasive and discrete nature of these sensors, integrated into devices accumulating large datasets, offers a unique opportunity to ...

Security of GPS/INS based On-road Location Tracking Systems

open access: yes, 2018
Location information is critical to a wide-variety of navigation and tracking applications. Today, GPS is the de-facto outdoor localization system but has been shown to be vulnerable to signal spoofing attacks.
