Many cardiac patients complain that they are unable to lie on their left side, or less often on their right side, because of shortness of breath, unusual awareness of the heart beat, palpitation, or pain. Wood and Wolferth 1 called attention to this fact in 1937 and studied 52 cardiac patients who exhibited a distinct preference for lying on one side ...

Five cases of neonatal opsoclonus were studied. It appears that opsoclonus first seen shortly after birth may be associated with other neurologic signs, especially mental retardation and ophthalmoplegia. Opsoclonus may also be seen without other neurologic signs in cases with extensive fundus abnormalities and poor visual acuity.

Acne vulgaris is uncommon in infancy. Although nonspecific follicular occlusion is frequently seen due to application of oils to the face, true acne is unusual. The following is a case report of infantile acne with evaluation of 17-ketosteroids in this dermatosis. Report of Case This 14-month-old male infant was first seen at 3 months of age.

Jaundice is a key manifestation of hepatobiliary disease in all age groups. Jaundice is a common finding in the first 2 weeks after birth, occurring in 2.4% to 15% of newborns. The neonatal liver is at increased susceptibility to cholestasis, with an incidence ranging from 1 in 2,500 to 1 in 5,000 live births. Etiologies vary, but the most

In order to prospectively study the development of strabismus in infancy, the ocular alignment of a large population of normal neonates was studied and follow-up examinations were obtained in a subset of these infants. The characteristic findings of congenital esotropia subsequently developed in three infants who were either orthotropic or exotropic at

Human infants display complex categoriztion abilities. Results from studies of visual preference, object examination, conditioned leg-kicking, sequential touching, and generalized imitation reveal different patterns of category formation, with different levels of exclusivity in the category representations formed by infants at different ages.

Hypertension in infants is rare and requires a thorough evaluation. The incidence of hypertension in infancy has risen in recent years, reflecting both better monitoring methods and increasingly successful salvage of smaller and smaller newborns. Overall mortality and morbidity rates for uncontrolled hypertension in infants are unknown.
