Craniectomy for middle cerebral artery infarction
British Journal of Hospital Medicine, 2005Acute occlusion of the major intracerebral arteries produces brain ischaemia and cerebral oedema with an attendant rise in intracranial pressure producing an intracranial compartment syndrome (‘malignant’ stroke). Over the course of 2003, three patients referred to the authors' unit underwent craniectomy for space-occupying malignant cerebral oedema ...

Hemicraniectomy for middle cerebral artery infarction
Current Neurology and Neuroscience Reports, 2008The space-occupying so-called "malignant" middle cerebral artery infarction is-besides acute basilar artery occlusion-the most devastating form of ischemic stroke. Until recently, there was no proven treatment. In 2007, results from randomized controlled trials provided evidence for the benefit of early hemicraniectomy with respect to mortality after 3

Malignant Middle Cerebral Artery Infarction Resulting from Dissection of Middle Cerebral Artery
Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases, 2015A 30-year-old man presented with headache, left hemiparesis, and uncal herniation. Magnetic resonance imaging showed acute infarction in the right middle cerebral artery (MCA). Lifesaving craniotomy proceeded because of the uncal herniation. Assessment of brain tissue led to a diagnosis of MCA dissection.
