Inferior Alveolar Nerve Repositioning
Atlas of the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Clinics, 2001Nerve repositioning is a viable alternative for patients with an atrophic edentulous posterior mandible. Patients, however, should be informed of the potential risks of neurosensory disturbance. Documentation of the patient's baseline neurosensory function should be performed with a two-point discrimination test or directional brush stroke test ...

NERVE DAMAGE ASSOCIATED: WITH INFERIOR ALVEOLAR NERVE BLOCKS
The Journal of the American Dental Association, 1995The authors reviewed 12 cases in which altered sensation occurred in the distribution of the inferior alveolar or lingual nerves following injection of a local anesthetic for restorative treatment only. Most patients suffered only partial damage, but recovery was poor.

A rare variation in the course of the inferior alveolar nerve
International Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2010Extra-canalicular variations of the inferior alveolar nerve are exceedingly rare and unreported. The authors report an unusual presentation of the inferior alveolar nerve perforating the ramus of the mandible with a very short intra-bony course and exiting laterally in a 20 year old indian female diagnosed with hemifacial microsomia.

Microsurgical correction of the injured inferior alveolar nerve
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1985The pathology of inferior alveolar nerve injuries is discussed and the general and special guidelines for microsurgical reconstructive procedures are presented. Twenty-three cases are summarized: 22 cases showed marked restoration of nerve function after surgery.

Fascicular characteristics of the human inferior alveolar nerve
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 1986Ten human inferior alveolar nerves were inspected microscopically to determine the fascicular characteristics. The mean number of fascicles was 18.3 per nerve, the mean fascicular cross-sectional area was 1.4 mm2, and the mean total nerve cross-sectional area was 4.6 mm2.

Coronectomy: A technique to protect the inferior alveolar nerve
Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, 2004Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve when extracting lower third molars is often caused by the intimate relationship between the nerve and the roots of the teeth. The technique of coronectomy, or intentional root retention, may minimize this problem.Forty-one patients underwent coronectomy on 50 lower third molars with follow-up of at least 6 months ...

Inferior Alveolar Nerve Repositioning and Orthognathic Surgery
Journal of Craniofacial Surgery, 2014Inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) repositioning is a well-known technique in implant dentistry. This invaluable technique can be combined with orthognathic techniques to enhance the effect of orthognathic surgery in some selected cases. In a retrospective study, data were obtained from the archived files of Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery ...

Histology and intramandibular course of the inferior alveolar nerve
Clinical Oral Investigations, 2010The morphology of the inferior alveolar nerve is a very important factor for all surgical procedures in the mandibular region. The aim of this anatomical and histological study was to describe the intramandibular course and the microscopic histology of the inferior alveolar nerve in the dissected human cadaver.

Coronectomy to Prevent Damage to the Inferior Alveolar Nerve
Alpha Omegan, 2009Conventional wisdom advises that when a tooth needs to be extracted, the whole tooth should be removed, usually with as little surrounding bone as possible. However, the evidence to support this is not compelling, and every dentist has experienced cases where the apices of teeth are not removed for a variety of reasons and, in most cases, the patient ...

Neurotropic melanoma invading the inferior alveolar nerve
Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, 2005Desmoplastic neurotropic melanoma (DNM) and neurotropic melanoma (NM), rare lesions of the head and neck, often present as a benign-appearing nodule which later progresses to cranial nerve involvement. To discuss treatment and outcome of 3 cases of DNM/NM of the lower lip.Three case reports with 12- to 54-month follow-up and literature review. The first ...
